The interesting facts...

TNT is one of the great things in Minecraft.
It is one of the only things that explodes, which makes it a top griefing tool.
TNT first appeared in Minecraft on the classic 0.26 survival test (October 24th, 2009).
About 57% of blocks destroyed by TNT do not drop items.
When TNT was added in the survival test players could punch the TNT to light it and punch it again to stop the countdown.
In Beta 1.9pre5, TNT's texture was changed slightly.
In snapshot 12w21a TNT could be naturally found under a desert temple.
When a player or Enderman holds TNT the texture is reversed, resulting with the N in TNT appearing backwards as ÐÐ Ð.

Crafting and exploding...
To craft TNT you will need to collect 5 gunpowder (either from creepers of dungeon chests), and 4 sand. Place the gunpowder in a X shape in your crafting bench and fill in the rest with sand. After all this hard work you will be rewarded with 1 TNT block. Place down the TNT anywhere you like and set it off with right clicking with a flint and steel, contact with fire, a fire charge, lava or a redstone current. Once lit, the TNT will magically start to follow the laws of physics, emit smoke and flash white. This is all over in four seconds.

Cannons and shelters...
First off, cannons. TNT cannons come in loads of shapes and sizes, you can have singular ones, powerful ones, vertical ones, scatter ones, the list goes on and on; but all TNT cannons rely on the same basic principle. Basically you have 2 sets of TNT per cannon. One set goes off a few seconds before the other set does. This means that the 2nd set will be blasted into the air by the 1st set. The other key feature is water. If TNT explodes in water it wono t destroy any other blocks. This means that if you have a water source block (bucket of water or block 08/09) at opposite end to where it is firing flowing down the cannon, it will stop the TNT from screwing things up.
Part 2: Shelters. Shelters can come in very handy during intensive TNT battles. The cheapest, least expensive way of protecting yourself is by submersing yourself in water. If you're looking for a more expensive option think no further than obsidian. Obsidian can be destroyed with TNT by using mods to have an extremely high concentration of explosive power but it can't be destroyed with TNT legitimately. If you are in creative mode then your best option is to whip out some bedrock.
