IMAGINARY

“Thump. Thump” I hear, the little noises in the night. “CREAK” the house says, as it settles in, and there I lay in my bed.
Every now and again Ill see them, the shadow men.
A figure in the closet, a bulge in the shadows here, a vague shadow there.
But I remind myself, its pitch black, I can’t see anything, its to dark.
A shadow flits across my moonlit room, then a heavy sigh.
My limbs lock up in terror, Im about to yell, but then I remember, its just my brother on the bunk bed below.
My demons and fears manifest in hallucinations, just out of eyes reach, and I wonder, how real are they?
I sit here and think, I glace over the edge of my bed, something ducks out of eyes reach outside the window.
I dive back under my covers, I dare not pop an eye out for fear of--
“Creeeeeaaaaaaakkk”
The closet door, wait, was it already open? Yes it was.
The shadow outside the window is back, oh god, no please don’t--
Its just a cat heh.
The dog would bark if anything was here, Im safe, Im sound, nothing will touch me.
The bulges and shadows I see in the corner of my vision, yes, its just my imagination.
Shoot, I have to take a pee.
I get up out of bed, and tread the dark hallway to the bathrooms light, whats that?
In the closet across the hall I thought I saw… No.
No more fear this is silly.
I do my business and return to my room, only to find a figure in shadow standing in the dorway.
I freeze up, Im paralyzed, I can’t go like this!
No please!
Its just my brother, up to see where I had gone off to.
I climb into bed and rest my head on my pillow, free of all fear.
“Its just my imagination.” and my eyes drift shut.
Then I feel it, something warm on my throat, clenching it, crushing it.
My eyes flutter open, and hazily see the black outline of a my standing over me.
“You should have checked the hallway closet.”
