My server has a live map, it's mostly to show off the epic proportions of our survival and creative maps, but some people on survival complain that the live map gives too much of an advantage. We've tuned our copy of Factions down a bit, to keep those harassing PvPers from following groups of people. As a result it's made a few of our more hardcore PvPers a bit more dismal over survival, but it's ok, because they all play on our Private WoW or COD4 server anyway, so it's not like they're bent on leaving.

We still encourage pvp as well, and we have a PvP arena and we've had a few small scale wars as well. So we're not down in the dumps over it or anything-but I want an opinion.

Do you think a livemap over a factions survival map gives too much of an advantage to those who know to use it? I personally don't, because people still use long-range radar mods or mini-maps anyway on strictly PvP-survival servers.

Nope, and here's why:

It equals out the playing field. People can have mini-map mods that would allow you to be followed anyways. Granted, anyone can get them and use them, but some people are just plan lazy or don't know how to install mods. So with livemap, everyone has a way of following each other. Granted, you have to be near the person in the first place, and livemap lets your track down anyone without having to be near them. But since livemap is a public service on a server, anyone and everyone can use it. It just adds yet another ordeal people must think about and find ways around when on a PVP server.

I think this is overall a good point. A lot of people who come on our server and don't know about live maps, are amazed when they see ours, and they eventually coordinate whole exploration plans using it, or find a spot to settle, etc. It's really helped keep people on our server. But I do agree-keeping it fair, especially in survival, is very important, and on most survival servers, those who have the mods have a serious advantage. Having the livemap as a standard in gameplay eliminates the advantages of those mods altogether, which is... basically your point restated. lol. Well, thanks for the input!
