Redstone is basically electricity in Minecraft. With redstone you power up machines such as a piston.(showed below)

Activating redstone things is simple. All you need to do is place a lever, place redstone next to it(optional but to make power go farther), and then something that needs to be powered by redstone, activate the lever, and let the magic begin! The maximum power level for as far as redstone can go without being re-powered by a redstone repeater is 8 blocks. You can also instead of levers use things such as redstone torches, pressure plates(used for traps most often), and heavy/light pressure plates. Pistons can move blocks and if it is something like torches it will instead of moving the torch, it will destroy it. Section updates in progress!
