Introduction.

Hey everyone, I'm BA-ACK! How have you all been? This is going to be a rather short blog, so I'm going to cut to the chase. What I'm going to be talking about today revolves around the theme of contests. We've all been noticing a lot of them lately, but what common theme have they been recenty sharing, which is skins. Why does this bother some of us? Let me explain....

"Category Segregation"

So this is a term I've heard people using when referring to the given issue. While vague, it does make sense. Only four contests we've had have been contests for categories other than skinning. However, these contests have co-existed with skinning contests, have received lesser publicity, lesser entries, and longer judging time. Overall, the quality of these contests was disappointing, atleast in my opinion.

So what's the main problem here?

Really, my problem with the contest situation, is that members who mainly post in other categories aren't given a chance to demonstrate their own skills. While I understand that the site is mainly for skinners, there are still many other categories with dedicated members that aren't given a chance to show off their skills, and in the end, isn't that what our contests are all about?

Let's look at it from the perspective of a contest manager.

A few months ago, when another one of our contests was announced, I asked a moderator why we don't have any blog/project/mod/Texture Pack contests. To quote: "We don't do these contests very often for many reasons, but primarily, because they're very hard to manage. A skin contest is easier to manage, because we judge the skins on diamonds, shading, concept, and overall quality, making it easier to judge on observation, and a brief reading of the lore. Whilst a blog contest requires judges to spend a long time reading the submission. A project contest requires judges to waste computer memory and download countless projects, observe the whole map, and do it all over again for the next submission. Texture pack contests require lots of time to review every item, especially in an expanding game like minecraft. Finally, a mod contest would require hours of download time, download frustaration, and a long, long time to learn how to use the items. Overall, it's just too difficult, so a skin contest is usually the preferred category. While we try to be inclusive of other categories, it's just very hard."
First of all,
THANK YOU FOR EXISTING, MODERATORS! Seriously, this is exactly an example of how helpful they can be. Thanks to this, I'm able to understand fully why the skinning contest is such a primarily used option. Now, confronted with this argument, we can see how difficult this must be. But, this can't satisfy our craving for "Category Integration", can it? Well, let's explore some options of what we can do!

What can we do?

Unfortunately, we can't dictate how PMC contests work, but here are some suggestions of what you can do yourself!

-Hold contests of your own! User-hosted contests are not only great publicity, they create a sense of community, aren't completely full of hundreds of entries, and are just fun!

-If you feel strongly about it, start a petition! If the site staff learn that enough people care about this issue, they might be able to find judges willing to read the submissions.

That's pretty much it. Sorry.

Conclusion.

Well, thank you guys for reading another one of my blogs! I really hope you enjoyed. Don't forget to leave a diamond, and feedback is always appreciated. I'm trying to hit 100 subscribers by the 20th, which is the start of my summer vacation. I'm currently only 15 subs away, so please help me out! And with that, I leave you. Goodbye!

I'm definitely in for a blogging contest. I'm not artist - at all. Unforunately, when it comes to blogging, everyone has their single favorite blogger, so it'd be kind of unfair. There's only a select few quality bloggers, and we all like one or the other, specifically. In skinning, well, there's a lot of skinners, so there's no need to worry about bias.

You make a good point. However, notice in skinning, that the famous members, people like Aquatta or HazelOrb tend to get lots of attention, while skinners producing [somewhat better] content are constantly overlooked. It's quite unfortunate how there is a bias system, not mentioning how many lvl 1 members will subscribe to moderators that haven't posted in 5 months because they think it well get them a moderator rank.
