SERVER 101 - A GUIDE TO THE FOLLOWING THINGS

-Basics-
Before you start reading this, you need to ask your self. Is your server,
Creative
Survival
Premium
Cracked
Vanilla
Dedicated
After that you will also need to ask yourself
Is your server...
a) Grief allowed
b) Grief not allowed
Now you may begin, I wrote this guide to help new players and old to help them make a fun server with the right plugins to stop those nasty griefers and how you can prevent griefs in the future.
Now for all of you who don't know what a griefer is, let me explain
A griefier is someone who goes round server or goes on a server and destory or builds on peoples creations. For example,
Jason has just finished a 10 hour building which he is proud off, He logs off.
Then
Andrew comes along and sees this building, he gets out some tnt or a diamond pickaxe or anything and starts breaking the blocks,
You get the point.
Here are some Do's and Don't's
- Do, Protect your building and creations
- Don't leave your server unprotected
- Do get plugings even if it is vanilla because if you plan on building something on vanilla and you dont have the right plugins its probably going to get griefied
- Don't Advertise your servers on Hack forums or griefing forums.
- Do post your server on PMC or Mcforums if you feel like you read this guide
- Don't make the server public unless you have PLUGINS
- Do read to this guide through out
- Don't skip everything in this guide or else you wont understand anything.
PLUGINS
Plugins can be an awesome way to play on your server, for some it is easy for others it is not, But if you do get stuck on any plugin, why not youtube it? There is probably a helpful guide there or ask someone on the forums, Of course you can always PM me.

Now for the anti grief plugins
Anti-Grief (server protection plugin)
As many of the pro users here know its hard to update to the latest bug hacks and plugin bugs since people are always looking for new ways to bypass world guard or authme etc.

I my self do admit to using 'hacks' before so i do know what most of them mean, Here are the most popular types of hacks and how to combat them.
- Fly - A simple 'hack' and a mod called 'zombe' if you do not want your players flying around the map then either get, NoCheat. Or (Not the best way) Go to your server.properties file and put in Flight = Deny. However this also stops the op's and admins from flying as you will get kicked.
- Speed - Also knows as Fast Walk or Sprint. This is a very easy hack to stop, just get NoCheat. That will roll them back when ever they speed and the admin will be notified.
- Nuker - Nuker is were the player griefs large areas of blocks mainly in creative quickly this is done by slowing down the packets sent and adding more packets of block breaks, In other words its you doing extra destroying fast. There are no known way of combating Nuker however certain custom plugins can stop this by disabling packet loss. Nocheat will help sometimes.
- X-ray - This one is nasty and hardly detectable as it depends on the user and how he uses it, xray is 100% un stoppable since it is client sided however, you can get plugins like Orb something or other cant remember the name, Or FoundDiamonds
- Spam - A hackers last resort most of the times, it is very easy to stop a spammer, and if you do not know what a spammer does, here is a quick post

- You get the point. Getting S.T.A.B will fix all your problems.
[Ddosing]
For those who dont know Ddosing or better known as Deniel of Service attack is ILLEGAL!!!!!!!!
However, Some pro hackers use this as a way to crash servers, there is a quick and easy way to stop this
Simply.
1) Open your main server files
2) Find something called bukkit.yml
3) Open it and find something that says "ping-packet-limit" Default it is set to 100 to stop ddosers change it to somewhere between 5-20
*WARNING* DO NOT TRY DDOSING SOMEONE AT HOME! I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED!
[Permissions]
Now this part is important, getting your perms right can mean life or death in a server, Permissions is not a hard thing to learn and there are several 'plugin' that do this
I prefer Groupmanager and yes some people might be going 'Omg thats is so old and complex' But i think once you get the hang on it, its quite nice

The ones listed support 'super perms' there are a few more but those are the biggest.
I have never used Pex or Bperms so i cannot tell you how to use those
I can tell you how to use GroupManager.
Installing GM is simple just download it from essentials and put in your plugins folder run your server and then restart it,
Once you have done that you will notice some files find one that says groups.yml
this is the one that you should be focusing on

Now let me tell you about 'nodes'
a node is a permission like when you say I want you to do this and only this. There are 2 types of Nodes
Positive and Negative
Positive nodes are
- essentials.kick
And Negative nodes are
- -essentials.kick
Now, i am assuming you have found out the difference, if not, then Positive is the permission that is allowed and negative is the one that is not allowed.
When downloading a plugin on the bukkitdev page there should say something like this
Permissions:
- Stab.exempt
etc.
It will also tell you what permission plugin the plugin supports.
Now, the groups
To make a group just type
(Group Name)

Advertisement
Unless you want your server for just your friend advertisement is a good way to get players! And there are many ways of doing it!

Minecraft server lists
This one is probably the main way of getting players,
There are 2 sites which attract the most visitors how ever you are free to visit your own
minecraftservers.net
and
minestatus.com (or .net cant remember)
