Hey everyone! Welcome to Server Tips, a brand new... thing. Yeah, it's still a work in progress. Anyway, what I'm gonna be talking about today is hosting a server. Now, many people actually fail at this point, and then wonder why their home-hosted server is slow as hell. So, let's start with home hosting, the first of the two:
Home-Hosting is the first of the two options. This is great if you only want a small server to play on with friends, or just a basic
server overall. It allows you to add plugins and add-ons easier, as opposed to Company-Hosting (which I will talk about in a
minute). It's also good if you want quick and easy monitoring of the server without having to actually go online. You can also
do commands from this console.
The downside is that the server is being hosted directly by your computer, which means that when you turn the console/PC off,
the server will shut down and nobody will be able to log back on until you come back on. This makes running a community server rather useless.
Overall Positives:
Quick and Easy
Great if you just want to play with friends.
Talk and use commands off the server.
Add plugins easily.
Overall Negatives:
Can be laggy if you have a weak computer.
Shuts down when you go away.
Kind of basic.
The next option is Company Hosting. Essentially paying a company to host the Minecraft Server for you. They will allow you to pick the kind of server you want, as well as add plugins easily. They almost always give you their console, which is more advanced then the basic home console. They have different plans (as shown in the picture) which you can choose from to suit your needs.
Of course, the downside here is that you have to pay, and in some cases, a lot. Unless you come from a rich background, you're going to struggle to afford things like 5GB servers. Unlike before though, it is 24/7.
Overall Positives:
A lot quicker.
24/7.
A lot more customizable.
Safer in some ways.
Much easier to manage.
Overall Negatives:
Can cost a lot.
Takes more effort to add things (like Tekkit).
Can crash on occasion.
If you aren't careful, you could lose money due to scam sites. Always read reviews and double check if a hosting site really is legit!
So that's it for the first server tutorial! Thanks for reading, and make sure to voice your opinion below! Thanks and goodbye!
