Have you ever heard of a game called Shovel Knight? If not, here's a brief explanation; it's an 8-bit styled platformer that is a mix of many NES games, such as Megaman, Ducktales and Zelda II. Basically, you are a knight that wields a shovel. Got it? Good.

Story
Now, Shovel Knights story is reminiscent of many other NES games. It is not hard to grasp at all, as well. In a land where many things are undiscovered, many adventurers roamed the lands. However, two prominent ones are Shovel Knight and Shield Knight. They adventured a lot and found tons of treasure. One day, when they were traveling in the Tower of Fate, Shield Knight was supposedly killed! Shovel Knight grieved over this and went into a life of solitude. While Shovel Knight was deeply saddened at his loss, the evil Enchantress ruled over the land and created The Order of no Quarter! Shovel Knight knew he had to do something, so he picked up his shovel and was ready to save Shield Knight!
Gameplay
Shovel Knight has many aspects that make the game very enjoyable. Yes, the game is hard, but it is not unfair in any aspects. Any deaths are bound to feel like your fault. Throughout your journey, you will find blocks of sand/dirt/other materials that you can dig up to find gold, which plays an important role. You can use it to buy armor, shovel upgrades, health/magic upgrades, and relics. Relics are sorta alternate weapons you can use to make your life easier, such as crossing spikes, killing enemies, finding secret areas, etc. You buy them from a guy named Chester who you can find in a blue chest in levels, or underground in the first town. Let me just say this game controls smoothly and your shovel swings at a nice pace. Shovel Knight feels like he has some weight to him, under all that armor. Sadly, though, this game takes only a couple hours overall to complete.
Graphics and Charm
I'm a sucker for 8-bit graphics, I'll say it. While not quite completely 8-bit, it still has the feel and looks like it. The characters and enemies have nice animations to them, and the bosses have personality and it's funny to read what they say in what you think their voice would sound like. None of the graphics hurt my eyes or anything, although the pitch-black sequences in Specter Knight's stage were super annoying. A lot of parts of the game had tons of charm, from King Knight's regal strut to Plague Knight's squeaky voice. Overall, I prefer this game as 8-bit over any other graphic style.
Final Score
I give this game a 10/10. It is charming, fun, and has just the right amount of difficulty to make me feel like I've accomplished something after each level. The graphics look good and there's a second, harder quest where you keep your relics, but take double damage. I'd be EXTREMELY happy if Yacht Club Games made a Shovel Knight 2 with a two player mode. Keep it up, Yacht Club Games! ;)
