This is my entry for the Chiaroscuro Writing Extravaganza - Simulacrum competition/community writing event. It is a continuation of Part VII by Inspirinq. I suggest reading the other parts before reading this or it will make absolutely no sense. Enjoy!
Simulacrum - Part II
Nadia stared at her clones. Screaming wasn’t helping anyone, and neither was crying. She tried wiping the tears away, but they’d turned to salt granules on her cheeks. It was so hot out here. She needed help, and the only other person around was her clone. Clearly the mountains were too far away for her to reach on her own, and maybe the clone knew a way to get there.
She gathered her courage before turning around to find her doppleganger standing right behind her. “Woah, alright. Uh, it’s going to be okay. Maybe I can help you figure out what you are, and then you can help me get to those big red mountains.”
She stared into Nadia’s eyes. “What am I?” She looked confused. “What am I?”
“You’re me, right? So what am I?”
The clone’s only response was a sullen stare.
“I mean, I’m a person. I’ve got a mom and a dad, and I tend to fit in. How about you?”
“What am I?”
“Well that didn’t work. You’re a background character I guess? Maybe a lost soul, doomed to forever wander through people’s dreams? I don’t know, What are you?”
“Am I…” The clone paused. “Human?”
‘Oh my goodness, she can form other words.’ Nadia thought. “I think so? Do you have feelings?”
It froze for a few seconds before shaking its head. “No.”
“But you looked scared earlier.”
“Yes.”
“If you’re me, then I’m you, which means you have to have some feelings.”
“Is abandoned a feeling?”
“Yes! Yes, this is progress. Abandoned is a feeling. It’s not the one I was hoping you’d go for, but it’s a feeling.”
“Oh.” The clone frowned and began to turn away.
“Wait, where are you going?”
“You don’t like abandoned. I am abandoned.”
“But that doesn’t mean I don’t like you! Sometimes we feel abandoned, I feel abandoned sometimes too, especially when my dad’s not home, or we move again and my life has to start all over, but there’s always someone out there who loves you.”
“Oh.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’re a real chatterbox, huh?”
“No.”
“It was sarcasm.”
“What is sarcasm?”
“Never mind, I’ll explain it some other time. Listen, I need some help. I can’t get to the mountains. Can you ask the shadows to calm down and walk with me to the mountains instead of having an existential crisis?”
She stared at me for a moment more before politely grabbing the attention of a shadowy figure. It was weird, watching them quietly tap one of their screaming friends and asking them for help.
After a moment, the crowd of shadows were all gathered around me. There were around twenty of them, completely motionless. Even though I knew they were harmless, it was a disconcerting experience.
“I need to get to that mountain.” I raised my hand towards its peak. “And I think you guys can help me.”
The clones all raised their right hands in unison.
“What are you doing?”
The clones closed their eyes and gestured for me to do the same.
“Okay…” I closed my eyes and awkwardly raised my right hand.
I heard a snap and opened my eyes. We were at the base of the mountain.
“How…?”
One of the clones stepped forward and smiled. “I am you. You are human. I am not human.”
“What? That doesn’t explain how we teleported.”
Then I blinked. The clone wasn't in front of me. I blinked again to see if she would magically re-appear. Nothing happened. The only thing that remained of them were twenty flat shadows that stretched out from my feet like sunbeams in all directions.
At any rate, I was at the mountain, which could only mean one thing. I did it. I could finally get out of this nightmare.
