Play by your heart. However, if your heart tells you to do something thats wrong and against the rules, if it'll get you banned or something then don't. But, always play by your heart.

I did this before, and its way more fun then helping your own team, most of the time I betray them, but sometimes I do not. Also, nothing in the rules says you cant help another team, so its completely fine if you do so.

there's nothing wrong with a bit of compassion. you need to keep in mind, that thanks to games like COD, BF, and so on, competative mindsets often override the compassionate side of people, resulting in the threats you received. too often, people forget that minecraft is, at heart, a game, and that if you're not outright ruining another player's experience, be it through grief, over-raiding, etc, there's really no reason to rage at people. while i agree that the rules should be followed, in the case you're talking about, you're fine. after all, if you're not enjoying yourself, what's the point of playing? that's the entire point of multiplayer.
