Here's a mining guide. Enjoy!
COAL
Coal can be found anywhere, from a deep cave to the Extreme Hill biomes. You can pretty much use a [url=minecraft.fandom.com/wiki/%20Wooden Pickaxe]wooden pickaxe[/url] (or higher) to break it. It drops 0-2 experience when mined.
IRON
Iron can be found on levels 1-62. Unlike coal, it takes a stone pickaxe (or higher) to break it. When smelted (it drops ore block) you get 0-7 experience. It cannot be mined by a gold pickaxe.
GOLD
Gold is found on the bottom 32 layers of the map, although most commonly found on layers 2-29. It takes an iron pickaxe or higher to mine. it gives you one XP when smelted.
DIAMONDS
Diamonds are on the rank of the rarest things in Minecraft. It's commonly found above a hot bubbling lava pool. It is also found on layers 5-12 and 16 or below. They give you 3-7 XP points when mined.
REDSTONE
Redstone is found on the bottom 16 layers of the map, taking an iron or higher pickaxe to mine. It drops 4-5 pieces of redstone dust when mined, (or more with Fortune, averaging at 6 redstone dust with Fortune level 3). If mined with Silk Touch, the block drops itself instead of redstone dust.
It drops 1-5 XP points.
LAPIS LAZULI
Lapis can be found on layers 31 and below, although most commonly found between levels 13-16. It takes a stone pickaxe or higher to mine. It drops 4-8 pieces when mined, also 2-5 XPs.
You may also meet with some generated structures. Here's what they are!
DUNGEONS
Dungeons are filled with mossy cobblestone and cobblestone mostly, containing 1-2 large chest with music discs. A mob spawner is in the middle of the room; it can spawn skeletons, zombies, spiders, creepers, etc.
MINESHAFTS/ABANDONDED MINESHAFTS
Mineshafts are the only place to find wood underground. There are a long complex of tunnels, mostly unlit. They contain rails and chests, containing TNT blocks, wood, even diamonds!
STRONGHOLDS
Strongholds is a very confusing complex of rooms and tunnels. The most useful are probably the Library (which is filled with cobwebs) and, of course, the Stronghold room. Beware of Silverfish!
You may also meet lava or ravines.
RAVINES
Ravines are full with lava, water and many precious items. Glow squids may spawn in the water, and emeralds, diamonds, lapis, etc, are usually found there.
