Chapter Three: A New Alliance
In their hasty retreat, the Eraya family and their personal guard managed to run into several trading vessels of Synestran origin headed for Aldenthro. Warning them of the city's capture, several ships joined the royal family's entourage, while others left to spread the warning not to return to the city.
The convoy was led by a member of the Eraya family by the name of Morton, the leader who ordered the small navy of Aldenthro to attack the Sypherians. A small, twitchy man, Morton proved himself to be a panicked leader who was not fit to continue to lead. One day, after imagining he saw a Sypherian ship in the distance, Morton somehow managed to leap off the side of the airship and plunge to his death in the sea below.
Without a leader, the convoy paused to decide what to do with themselves. Examining the 600 or so members of the convoy, they held an election to see who would take power and lead the Synestran people to their new home. The election came down to two men; Rynt, an older gentleman who was a member of the Aldenthro aristocracy, and Rapp, a younger man who had worked in the steam industry on Aldenthro until purchasing his own trading ship and traveling the seas; he had been away during the taking of Aldenthro, but had learned his own share of military tactics. In a very close election, Rapp took the victory due to his experience at sea and military knowledge.
One day, as the entourage continued East, they noticed several dots in the sky. The experimental airship they had used to escape was deployed, and gained altitude in order to investigate the mysterious dots. Much to their shock, the dots turned out to be other airships! After several hours of observing these ships, one of the unknown ships noticed the sole Synestran airship, and flew down to greet her. Afraid that the people they would meet were just like the Sypherians, the experimental airship quickly descended back to the group at sea.
However, their retreat only attracted more of the unknown airships, and it became obvious an encounter was inevitable. An airship of the unknown people docked next to a larger Synestran boat, and the frightened Synestrans were met with a regally dressed group who reported they hailed from an empire by the name of "Arkellia." After hearing the story of the Synestran's plight, anger flared in the men's eyes, and they sent an airship away to an unknown destination. Rapp, desperate to avoid another conflict, welcomed the Arkellians kindly.
The day after, the small ship the visitors had sent off returned, followed by something that shocked the Synestran people; an absolutely colossal airship. The ship had to be at least 100 meters long. A smaller sheep unattached itself from the colossus, and flew down to meet the Synestrans. Out of this small ship stepped a man who called himself Rova. His flagship was called the Etherwind, and he was obviously very proud of it.
After a long, private discussion with Rapp, he informed the convoy that the Arkellian people could not sit by and observe injustice in such terrible form, and that he and his fleet would be assisting the Synestrans in taking back Aldenthro, no matter what it meant for his country. Deeply moved by his kindness, Rapp pledged his own men to combat, and the two turned their ships around and headed back to Aldenthro.
