Good and Evil. Do they exist?

I'm here to argue that in fact, they do not.

Now lets go ahead and clear something up, I'm Agnostic. What does that mean? I do not hold any current bearings with religious beliefs. Therefore any sort of "divinely applied morality" will be left out of this. If that factors into your belief system, I won't down you for it; you're entitled to your freedoms as an individual.

Good and Evil are purely man made concepts. I say this simply because it is completely non-existent in a world in which we don't exist (This can be found in nature). Now what does that mean? That means if a snake goes and eats a mouse it is simply his survival, he is no more evil than before.

We, as humans, have constructed morality as a system of keeping ourselves in line. Technically, if I kill a man, no one is going to punish me. I will incur no negative actions. That would be the case, if we didn't have complex systems of law and order. It is not some cosmic trait that is applied to us. It is a man made system of checks and balances used to enforce our laws.

What I believe is that in a completely lawless society, morality would not exist. Good and Evil would be reduced simply to survival. Because when you are attempting to survive 24/7 you have less time to think, or to care about how your actions may affect your moral standing.

Speaking of which, let's go ahead and clarify on just what a moral standing is. Moral standing is how far skewed you are toward one particular aspect of morality; Good or Evil. I believe its more of a reflection of your social standing. Say I break a law, I am now branded a criminal within the justice system and society's eye. Am I really anymore "evil" than someone else? We as humans apply too much emotion to particular things. We over value human life.

I know that sounds extremely cold, but think about it realistically. Do you honestly care about that person on the news that just got shot? The one you never knew? You may react to it yes, but deep down are you really affected by such things? Impersonal actions such as this usually only warrant a passing view.

The only thing that punishes us for being "evil", against the society set "good", is man made institutions of law and order. I don't believe in a special quality that skews as I do.

I was just doing some thinking and wanted to share my opinion.

Feel free to debate against me in the comments.
