I'm curious to hear from the community what it is in a skin that grabs your attention?

I've made several skins recently that have gone largely unnoticed. I feel that my most recent, a submission for the Cyberpunk Skin Contest, flew completely under the radar and I have no idea why. They get a couple views when I first post them, and then, nothing.

So from professional skinners and users alike. What is it in a skin that grabs your attention?

Is it:
  • A catchy title
  • The shading
  • Good story
  • Unique style
  • Unique subject matter
  • New techniques
  • Additional media (pictures, videos, etc)
  • Something else

I feel that I typically include most of those things in my skins and yet the formula doesn't result in any more attention.

What does it take to get noticed? Begging for diamonds and subs? Ridiculously contrasted shading techniques (white to dark color)? Hundreds of subscribers (which is a circular argument)?

I have to say I've been getting frustrated by this, especially when it seems that recently the contest finalists have been biased towards those skins with the most community attention (which arguably makes sense, but it seems that some are overlooked because they may not have very many diamonds).

Just throwing out some feelers to answer this unanswered question - I don't see the pattern.

Thank you all,
MD out.

I like catchy titles and good skins/shadings. I don't care much about the backstory, though it does add a cool feel to the skin

I used to have moments when I thought I was not getting noticed, it can be pretty frustrating, but what is important is that you keep at it (making skins), and keep trying to improve.

Thanks LiFella. Yeah I've found that it can be hard; but I think I've found that the secret is mostly to find a technique which is enjoyable for you and improve in it.

If only I had more to offer; so much of this is still a mystery to me, lol.

I need more recognition for my skins. Just recently I ran into a a few people recording for Youtube. So I put an ad on the chat. One got frustrated and started over. The other kept rolling, (he also got some footage of me playing GhostCraft.)

But yeah, you're right. Posting other pictures and/or writing a backstory does help out. I'm thinking, "I'm an ARTIST! Why haven't I been doing this in the first place?"

Thanks for the tips.

I swear, I see some pretty shit skins on the pop reel that people get recognized for anyways...They ofen lack any attention to detail and are just bad

The rest are, as you siad, a circular argument, since I cannot go a day without some skinning bigshot hogging 1 or more of the popular reel slots(dinowCookie has 2 on the same day today, really???)

The way the system is set up makes it nigh impossible for less known artists (under 50 subscribers) to get their stuff up on the reel. Some sort of anonymous voting system or something could be an interesting alternative.

But for now, it will continue to cycle through the same group of skinners who've already been established.

you sometimes i think in this community you have to build up your name so that people will recognize your work. and a huge part of it to me is finding ways to appeal to the largest group of people.

...and or people love to see out of the box thinking like your sun tea skin and others.
