I never knew what was so special about a Minecraft sheep; sure, they were one of the oldest mobs around since they were added in versions of Alpha. But what was the point in them if they didn’t drop food back in Alpha? Why did the wolves and foxes kill them?? And why can the simple nametag be renamed to ‘jeb_’ to make a sheep turn rainbow???
It was just an ordinary day. I had decided to take a small stroll through the forest and I could see colourful flowers everywhere. Everywhere you looked was a new mob, a new tree, a new feeling.
When the sun started to set, I opened my inventory and crafted a campfire. I placed it down on the floor and cooked my pork chops on it. I was just about to place my comfortable green bed and get some rest when I heard a rustling in the bushes.
I got out my diamond gear (I had not acquired Netherite yet) and took the pork chops. They were juicy and tender, just how I like it.
’Show yourself!’ I exclaimed. More rustling. Then I saw what looked to be a brown sheep. It stared at me and wandered off.
’Stupid sheep.’ I went over to my crafting table and made a sturdy oak chest, then I opened it and dumped my gear inside.
I placed down my bed and was just about to get some rest when I heard more rustling.
’Where… where did my sheep go?’ An old man stumbled from the long grass, clutching his walking stick. The end of the stick had brown wool clinging on to it.
’I saw a brown one leap out the bush. Is tha-‘
’Yes, that’s my sheep!’ The old man pointed to his stick. ‘It’s the only one in the whole county!’
’Why do you care about it going missing? You can always find another.’ I said.
’I’d rather have my own darling sheep than a total stranger!’ he explained.
’I guess. Anyway, your connection to sheep seems so, umm… strong? And anyway, what’s your name?’
’Jimmy, or Jim. And yes, sheep are very special to me.’
I stared at him for a moment. ‘Why are they so special?’
‘I’ll tell you, laddie. But it’s a long story.’ He looked at the moon. ‘And you should be in bed by now. In fact, I’m not telling you until you’ve slept.’ the old man croaked.
’You aren’t my grandpa! But sure, anything to hear that story.’ I climbed into bed and pulled the sheets over my head.
I started to have a peculiar but nice dream about a sheep flying past clouds with me on its back.
In the morning, the old man had disappeared. I searched for him after a quick apple or two for breakfast, and found him asleep next to the brown sheep. Jim was laying on the sheep’s body, drooling some disgusting mixture of saliva and last night’s beef. The sheep was also asleep, but wasn’t drooling. Thank goodness for that!
I shook Jim’s arm and waited a few seconds. He turned to face me and opened his eyes, and thankfully stopped drooling.
’What? What? Oh, it’s you.’ Jim stretched his limbs and cracked his back.
’You said you’d tell me why sheep were special.’ I lead him on the muddy path back to my camp.
I placed some logs down and let him sit on one. I sat down opposite him, warming my hands on the campfire.
’It’s a long-winded story, and I don’t want you to fall asleep. Also, keep in mind that I hate cows.’ Jim placed down some beef on the campfire.
’Why?’ I watched the beef sizzle and cook until he picked it up and ate it.
’They hate sheep. I am one with the sheep, and not to be argued with!’ He stood up and brushed some of the small bits of beef onto the grass.
‘Okay. So, I want to hear this story. Please, tell me!’
’Okay kidda, listen up. It all started at the very first official version of the game…’
