If you are a mapmaker, there is one realization that you must have made:
MAPMAKING CAN BE BORING.
Sometimes you have to repeat one thing over and over, sometimes you come to a major roadblock that you don't know how to get past, and sometimes you just get tired of coming up with ideas. In my most recent map, I have to copy a more advanced version of the picture above 10 times.
Here's how to get past those problems:
1. Repeating Structures.
When you have something you need to repeat many times, the best thing to use is a mod or a program.
One of my favorite is mcedit. Its an external minecraft world editor. you can find it here: http://www.mcedit.net/.
Another good one is worldedit. Its usally meant for servers, but it comes with Single Player Commands. link here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/94310-162-single-player-commands-v49-official-download-spc-noclip/
2. Being really bored and having no ideas.
Take breaks. Whenever I make a map I always make 1 level then go play some other game for the rest of the day. When your doing that, try to use it to come up with more ideas. Playing Half-Life 2? Add a horror aspect! Playing Starbound? Make it in space! There's always some aspect of another game you can add to yours to make it better.
3. A unique gameplay mechanic.
this is optional, but normally you'll need it to make an interesting map. how to come up with one? normally, I go onto the wiki or some other website and look up advanced command block tricks. for example, I have an unreleased map called "The Third Arm" (coming soon! ;D) that relies on teleporting to relative coordinates (~1 ~50000 ~-56)
4. feedback
once you release your map, you'll want to:
~Get feedback from close friends who've played it
~Test it yourself
~This way you can find glitches. as annoying as they can be to fix, you really don't want more negative feedback.
5.quality
please, just don't have crappy quality. just... your map will never be successful as famous mapmakers if the text is all signs and there's no redstone! use /say a lot, and /testfor too, as tripwires kind of suck... Useful tip: name a command block something in an anvil. Lets say you name it pie. /me hi would do [pie] hi.
should we publish more tips on mapmaking? or just more maps? or both! tell us in the comments.
