So, lately I have been thinking about a few things.

One of which is that I keep seeing so many Skyblock rehashes by random people. It's usually one of their first maps, and all they really do is change the shape of the island or what's in the chest. Not exactly originality at its finest.

However, all of these maps got me thinking: What's so great about Skyblock? What even made it popular in the first place? Why are so many people intent on copying it's maker's idea?

The Truth

It finally occurred to me that the reason for its popularity came because of two things: simplicity and challenge. When someone first plays Minecraft, one reason why they are drawn in is because of the simple goals you have to achieve: Survive, mine, fight, build. Of course, eventually this plain survival gets pretty boring.

That's where Skyblock came in. Skyblock plays on the simplicity of a blocky survival game, but adds a twist: You have limited resources and an endless pit beneath you. The original challenge of Minecraft survival is rekindled by the daunting pressure of the abyss and your tiny little island. If you have ever played Skyblock, you understand the new pressures that come along with surviving in the sky. This is what truly made Skyblock succeed: the challenge of living on the edge indefinitely.

As for why so many people are intent on making their own Skyblocks, the answer is actually pretty simple: They feel that if it was such a booming success the first time, then they would receive some of that hype too. Note that most rehashes are made by newcomers to PMC. Contrary to reality, they might think that their new Skyblock will push them up to popularity. Which has worked for some people, like the guy who made Skyblock PVP. But in most cases, people just pass right over them.

Or it could just be because they are easy to make. Either way, not much effort is put in, and not much attention is given back.
