here are some things you should worry about when hosting a server:
  1. setting up a server can take some time before you start you should look at a video which will show you on either Mac, Windows or Linux or MC wiki on how to start
  2. If you want to Host and play on the same machine it shouldn't matter unless you have a slow computer.
  3. Netbooks and Notebooks don't usually make for good server machines. They have bad hardware compared to desktops and dedicated server machines.
  4. Hosting a server with many players in a wireless network (WLAN and especially WWAN) is not recommended. Use wired network instead.
  5. If you don't want to host, but still want to play online, think about going to the server section of this website: servers
  6. If you still want to manage a server but not use your home computer then you can buy a dedicated server form websites like Quad Eye, Minecraft Server Host, Dedicated Hosting and Oz Servers
  7. there are also different types of servers such as bukkit, spout MCserver & Mineserver (sorry i don't have links yet)
