here are some things you should worry about when hosting a server:
- setting up a server can take some time before you start you should look at a video which will show you on either Mac, Windows or Linux or MC wiki on how to start
- If you want to Host and play on the same machine it shouldn't matter unless you have a slow computer.
- Netbooks and Notebooks don't usually make for good server machines. They have bad hardware compared to desktops and dedicated server machines.
- Hosting a server with many players in a wireless network (WLAN and especially WWAN) is not recommended. Use wired network instead.
- If you don't want to host, but still want to play online, think about going to the server section of this website: servers
- If you still want to manage a server but not use your home computer then you can buy a dedicated server form websites like Quad Eye, Minecraft Server Host, Dedicated Hosting and Oz Servers
- there are also different types of servers such as bukkit, spout MCserver & Mineserver (sorry i don't have links yet)
