This guide will show you how to conquer Minecraft in the easiest way possible. This guide is only made for Single Player and I am not sure if it will work for SMP.
#1: Go Straight Towards The Woods!
No matter where you are. Desert, swamp, tundra, anything. Go straight towards the wood! Collect at least half a stack or a stack of logs. Instantly make a crafting table, planks, and wooden tools.
#2: Build A Safe Area To Live!
This is a EXTREMELY important step. I suggest building a 12x12 or a 14x14 home. Make the walls At least 3 blocks high. This will give you enough space to put your crafting table and chests at.
#2 and a Half: Get Wool If You Can!
If there are any sheep around you, KILL THEM. Make a bed and put it in your safe area! Wait until night comes, get some sleep and now if you die, you spawn there! Makes your life easier.
#3: Make A Mine!
Make a mine either in your house or a few blocks away from your house. This way, monsters aren't so close to you to kill you and such. With a wooden pickaxe, you can get 60 pieces of cobblestone. But if you find coal, go ahead and mine it!
#4: Make Upgraded Tools/Etc!
Go ahead and make a furnace and stone tools. Use your stone pick and dig deeper and search for some iron. Iron is your number one priority at this point. Get as much as you can get and don't forget to get more cobblestone just in case.
#4 and a Half: Food?!
By the time you have that stuff done, you will need food. From here, find wild grass, get seeds, and grow a farm right in front of your house. (Don't forget the hoe!) Grow some wheat, and get some bread! And to make that farmland better, use the iron you got earlier to make a bucket!
#5: A Choice...
From here on out, you can go for the diamond with the iron you got earlier. Or you can mine some more for some more iron/coal/etc. before you go for it. And you can go get some wood as well!
#6: Diamond?
After deciding, you probably went for the diamond in the end. And some tips on finding that diamond are using the F3 coordinate scale. First, press Shift and F3 to just show the top part. Now look for the Y coordinate. When you dig down, the number will drop. Now when you dig down to the level "12" that is a very popular diamond level. Easiest way to find your first diamonds? Make big rooms in the 12 area. You are bound to find your treasure.
#6 and a Half: Trouble with diamonds again?
So this happens to some people. They go digging for a while and yet, no diamonds. I have a technique that is usually bound to find diamonds. At the level 12, make a 1x2 hallway and dig straight across on both sides of the hallway. This will reveal the ores/etc. when you mine across. Very efficient and finds more than just diamond.
#7: IT HAS HAPPENED!
You just found diamond. Your life is now complete. Now, after this event has happened, read below for a list of challenges/things to do after you have found your diamonds.
