PROLOGUE

The man walked quietly through the hall, naked sword in his right hand. The grand building that enclosed him was silent. Still, he knew that he wasno t alone. Passing soaring pillars, he came to a large intersection. There were four different paths. Two large archways were on the right, with a smaller archway in the center and a trapdoor in the floor to the left. He dropped to the ground and put his ear to the polished floor.

o The ground reveals many answers,o he murmured to himself. o Yet, it does not reveal the answer the answer to my riddle...o He rose. o Evil things live below the earth... I shall go there.o Steeling himself for what might lay beneath, he opened the trapdoor, revealing an ancient wooden ladder. A great stench rose from the hole, but he ignored it and continued his descent. The ladder led down into a dimly lit tunnel. The walls and floor were of packed dirt and a small trickle of water flowed through the middle. I wish I hadno t left Merik... He would have known how to navigate this place, he thought to himself. I might as well see where this water is coming from. There was a rumbling sound from above his head. o There isno t much time!o he said to himself, and started to run. He came to many forks and turns, but he continued in a straight path. Another rumble shook the tunnel. Small showers of dirt and dust fell from the ceiling. Fearing danger, he quickly veered right, down a different path.

o Wait... I think I know where I am...o Looking at the wall, he noticed that its composition was of stone, rather than dirt. He stumbled down the hall, his heart pounding in his chest. He did know where he was; he had been here before. He knew that the old nightmare had seemed far too authentic. His fear grew as he continued down the path, now aware, to an extent, of where he was going and what he would find. The quality of the stone making up the walls and floors began to improve, and farther down the tunnel, he could see where torches began to line the walls. At last, when the passageo s construction was of marble blacker then the darkest night, he came to a door. This was a door, he knew, that revealed something both wonderful and terrifying, though what specifically, he could not say. There was a lock, which he quickly disabled with the muttering of a few words. He turned the handle and flung the door wide. His relief was instant; there, on the other side of the room, was his beloved Rebeka, for whom he had searched for months on end.

o Rebeka!o he shouted, his joy overwhelming his sense of fear and danger. o At last, I have found you!o His joy turned to confusion, however, when she did not acknowledge him, but merely continued staring at the wall. He slowly approached her, his apprehension again beginning to grow. He had only gone a few steps when the door suddenly swung shut behind him. He heard the click of the lock. He spun and ran to it, once again murmuring the spell he had used to unlock it the first time. However he was not successful; something far more powerful had enchanted the lock...

He turned slowly back to Rebeka, his brain finally comprehending what his heart had known all along.

o You should not have come here, Jahkob.o she said quietly, finally meeting his gaze. o You should never have followed me.o

o What are you talking about?o he said, now trembling with fear. His mind told him to back away, but there was nowhere to go; he was already at the door. He raised his sword instinctually, his body sensing the danger his mind still refused to accept. o What are you doing?o

o I have no choice, my love. You were warned.o She began to slowly approach the man, a pained expression marring her beautiful features. o Please understand, darling. I truly have no choice.o She raised on hand, pointing it at his heart.

The man could not believe what was happening. He fell naturally into a defensive position, his body moving with the grace only years of experience and trial in combat could give. o Beka, what on earth are you-o He never finished his sentence. The bolt of red energy hit him directly in the chest, going straight through his heart and hitting the door behind him, charring the wood.

o Io m sorry, love. Couldno t be helped.o even as she apologized to the still body of the man she loved, a sinister smile began to form on her face. Now, she could continue uninterrupted with her plan.
