On Monday, the Chicago Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup for the third time in 6 years, thus becoming the first Hard-Cap-Era NHL Dynasty.  I wonder how that's going to affect this week's episode of Week in Review.

undefined

The best structure this week was the Dark Factory, created by Elysiumfire.  This build was created by an immense team of builders, many of which have had their work featured on Week in Review before.  It’s not a surprise that this gathering of master crafters produced what I can only describe as a chaotic masterpiece.

undefined

Dark Factory has a sort of dark, hazy, ruinous feel to it.  Whatever this factory was tasked with assembling, I don’t think it’s been in operation for some time.  It’s situated on top of a vast, marshy swampland, which is great because that way they can just dump all the waste directly into the ecosystem.  Efficiency is a top priority.

undefined

The most bizarre feature of this map is the fact that it appears to be powered by a giant mechanical horse on a treadmill.  It’s kinda like a giant hamster wheel, except I have a feeling that most of the work-related injuries in Dark Factory are due to workers accidentally getting trampled to death beneath the rampaging mecha-horse’s hooves.

undefined

The rest of the area is littered with steam chutes, massive hanging chains, a railroad, conveyer belts, cranes, and several aircrafts.  Most of the architecture looks worn, jagged, and significantly damaged.  Tetanus shots are required for employees.

undefined

While Dark Factory certainly doesn’t appear to be the most pleasant place to work, it’s definitely pleasant to look at.  Perhaps this is some vague statement about the industrial decay of the modern world.  Probably not.  I have a feeling this was made to turn some heads.

The best terraforming of the week was Dracyln, created by Skiasa_.  Dracyln is a massive, multi-biome map that offers a lot of different types of terrain.

undefined

The map is divided into roughly 4 sections.  The first is a mountainous grassland, complete with rivers, peaks, rolling plains, and lush evergreens.  It looks like an ideal place to go on a hiking trip (and to catch Lyme disease).

undefined

Dracyln also has a vast desert biome.  The outskirts look similar to a savanna, but the center is covered with gigantic sandy dunes.  The dunes are made up of swirly patterns of red clay, giving it the appearance of chocolate vanilla swirl pudding.

undefined

At the bottom of the map there’s a frozen tundra region.  The mountain ranges here are caked with snow, and tremendous ice spires litter the plains.  It’s amazing how quickly the climate can change from desert to snowy wasteland.  I mean, it’s like a ten minute walk between the two.  Oh well, that’s Minecraft for you.  Don’t ask questions.

undefined

And, of course, no epic terraforming project would be complete without the obligatory volcano region.  Though, in this case, there is a bit of an unexpected treat.  The mountains surrounding the vast lava pits are sprinkled with what appears to be giant bones, horns, and tusks.  I wonder what kind of savage beasts once roamed these plains.  Maybe we could extract some DNA from them, and create a theme park on the- What?  It failed horribly in the movie?  Never mind.

undefined

This week was dominated by particularly artistic organic projects.  There were a lot of sophisticated and well thought out projects that caught my eye.  But ultimately, there can only be one!  The best organic work of the week was Emotion, created by Plutouthere.

undefined

This project, ladies and gentlemen, is art.  It’s not debatable.  The build is basically a shadowy outline of a human head, with the cranial cavity carved out.  Inside is what I can only described as a humanoid figure with a texture that is very similar to muscle tissue.  The figure is kneeling in a pose of sheer agonizing despair.

undefined

Concordantly, tear droplets fall from the dark backdrop, reinforcing the theme of sorrow.  This build is called emotion, but it’s not about just any emotion.  This is specifically about sadness, but the reason it’s not titled ‘sadness’ is because the aim of the game is to transmit the feeling to the viewer, which it does admirably.

undefined

Emotion captures the feeling of sadness so well, that it almost makes me want to see a series of these sculptures that capture other feelings as well.  This is definitely one of the most original, breaths of fresh air I’ve seen in a while here on PMC, and I hope to see more like it in the near future.

I liked that one too.  It just wasn't quite big, or complex enough to overtake Dark Factory.  ;)
