Hello PMC'ers to my second blog. This time its about something that almost every non minecrafter thinks about:
why is minecraft so fricking popular?
Because on the first looks minecraft is just a part of crap: awfull graphics, terrible gameplay and you need a computer to hack the FBI. However minecraft was enable to get a player base in the millions! So how did this crappy game did this you ask? the answer is simple:
Minecraft is one of the most briljant and creative games and , what im sure of, that Notch his livegoal was to make heroïne in game what he accomplished with minecraft.
So lets start by the most weak point of minecraft: The graphics
The awfull graphics are however just the thing to help shape the game to the awesome creativity in game. And you have games like Call of Duty and Battlefield that just tries to melt your brains with the graphics. But because of that the players are raging about every small texture bug they can find. Minecraft doesnt has the problem with their graphics. They dont try to hide the crappy graphics. Thats how people get quickly used to the textures of minecraft and their attention at the game itself.
Next up : the gameplay
The gameplay is so made that you quickly think that minecraft is a caveman game because.. well.. it is. But despite this thanks to Notch his purpose to make gaming heroïne you keep playing for a time that most games can not accomplish.The feeling you get when you find your first diamonds after you fought skeletons, zombies and creepers is just amazing. Thats why minecraft still keeps its fun after playing a amount of time that by other games people get over there enjoymend. The gameplay is also as great because you can build anything that you want. You can make a simple dirt house or a entire copy of the hunger games untill you insperation gets up or a giant army of creepers blows up your builds.
The final thing il say before this blogs ends is the most important thing in minecraft: The community
Despite all the hacked acounts and now buyed stuff minecraft still keeps the top of the games where the players does the most:The texture packs, mods,custom maps and servers created only by the player itself is just amazing. Now Notch and Jeb did a briljant job at creation minecraft but its really thanks to the fans that minecraft is just so awesome. And also the giant community on youtube that makes minecraft videos like captainsparklez, yogscast, inthelittlewood, chimneyswift, antvenom, skitscape, bebopvox etc. Everyone that is seeing that is also very exited about the game itself and wants to play it (there is the heroïne)

Oh, and as for the graphics, if the world wasn't made of one meter cubes, the world's file size would be way to big.
2. Community, community, community, community, community, community, community. Texture packs, mods, etc. it's a highly tweakable game so it can be modified to suit pretty much everyones taste. But most of all we human like to connect and talk about stuff so yeah, community.
It doesn't hurt either that it's a game both boys and girls like to play. It's a misconception girls don't game but most of the girls do play facebook games and such whereas boys play first person shooters (i'm generalizing ofc), nobody can deny boys and girls create a dynamic together because well, all those pubering peeps, what do you expect to happen? Still, it's all community.
The price is a threshold people have to overcome when buying a game, since the threshold is not that high for minecraft, it's just easy to try it out. All this stuff works together and reinforces itself. Making a highly creative dynamic mix of people, ideas and creativity. It might just never get old, but we'll have to see i guess :)
