Why does the top things in PMC "suck"? Well, here it will explain everything about it!

Skins
Some of them may not be shaded or are just unoriginal, well back then, we didn't have all these programs to make it shady like the skins today, so those got popular way back in like 2009, and still live with people who don't really like shading
Projects
So the top projects are awesome, but some of them, not so much, the temple of notch is really good, but some things that hit the pop reel nowadays use more powerful redstone, the temple of notch was made in beta, when there wasn't all those snabby blocks that always make stuff look good.
"Unoriginal"
So a lot of you are probably like, this skin is unoriginal! Well, guess what, it was the original version of that skin, like the Honeydew one, it's called dwarf red beard for a reason, if it was unoriginal, it'd actually be called Honeydew
