Well windows 8 developer preview is out and of course I had to grab a copy so I could fiddle with it (I am an ex hacker so giving me a developer OS and the freedom to change things makes my nipples hard lol). So I installed it, played with it and It was mildly disappointing. First of all I am a Linux user and use windows only to play games so all the while that I am tinkering I am also thinking "they stole this from Linux and that from Linux" I understand that this is supposed to be a cross platform OS working on the PC Tablet and Cell Phone alike but that is also the feeling you get when the start page loads, that it is a huge android smart phone. The problem is that it is not that smart, 90 % of the built in apps offer no exit or close option, they simply become suspended for a while consuming memory, which means that if you open one or two and expect to play Minecraft soon after be prepared for heavy lag. There is also a function called System Maintenance that turns itself on without warning and grinds your computer to a halt,offers no progress notification and then gives no information on what it did when it finishes, I could not even open web pages while this ran and had to turn the service off all together (don't even get me started on drivers I am still trying to get my printer to work). On the other hand the system did boot very fast, the folder options, though obviously stolen from Linux, ad great functionality and anyone used to a touch screen or a smart phone will find the layout simple and intuitive all though the rest of us will be screaming "What the hell did you do to our start button operations"! At the end of the day I just feel that this is widows 7 with a neat but over time useless new start screen and Updated GUI that is already commonplace on other OS's and can be achieved on Windows 7 with a few hacks and application downloads, I think the average user will become disenchanted with the new windows a few weeks after install and a large percentage will reinstall 7.
