In an effort to encourage exploration and adventure I have created a custom datapack.

As a nomadic wanderer you will travel the world and never stay in one place for very much time.

Hoarding items in a chest could keep you tied down to one location so that is discouraged here. Chests and barrels can not be crafted in the early to mid game.

Also, it is not realistic for wooden tools to break stone, so you will have to find a way to advance in the very early game.

In addition to removing the crafting recipe for chests/barrels, I removed furnaces, and the wood hoe and wooden axe. (These still exist but are now very expensive to craft). Try to make a campfire to cook raw meats.

Neither Stone nor Coal will drop with a wooden pickaxe, as you will need a stone pick at least to harvest these.

Iron Ore requires at least an iron pickaxe to harvest it. Instead, go exploring to find iron in loot chests.

Beds will spawn in villages so you can use those if you like, but this will NOT set your respawn point. You will respawn randomly in the world after death !

To save your most important items, use the new and improved Ender Chest, which is now easier to craft. Only 8 obsidian are needed, so you will NOT need an Eye of Ender ! The new "Ruined Portals" exist in the overworld and contain obsidian in loot chests.

You will have to explore the world to find iron and tools, and other important loot.

Wood logs and planks can not be harvested by hand. Try digging for gravel if you need some wood !! ;) ( craft the new 2x2 "flint axe" recipe )

The main goal is that exploration is the primary task during the early and mid-game phase.

So, find a good village or else a Buried Treasure Map. ;)

Once you obtain Silk Touch you will be able to harvest chests and furnaces in the world.

Barrels, Blast Furnaces, and Smokers have been updated as well. See the full changelog for more details.

Try out this datapack today, on a new 1.18.1 world to discover all of the new gameplay mechanics which I have implemented !

FUTURE UPDATES:

I can imagine adding new custom recipes to increase difficulty of the early to mid game and to somehow reward players that continue to wander as a nomad in the late game.

Stay tuned ...

Let me know if you enjoy this pack and feel free to offer suggestions.

Thanks,

Datapack has been fixed to work with MC 1.20.6

It seems that it broke on April 23, when the syntax for predicates was changed :

To be clear, I do not work on nor test my datapacks inside of snapshots. I always wait until the full release, then fix/update everything at that time.

Enjoy !

After a year with no changes, the datapack has now been updated to work with Minecraft 1.19.4 . Also I took this opportunity to increase saddle loot drop rates slightly (in chests) to make horse travel a bit more feasible.

On a side note: the multiplayer server has been shutdown, unfortunately. Try this out in singleplayer today !

CHANGELOG

ver.013b 2020-NOVEMBER-11

Updated the following Block Loot Tables :

Stone - requires Silk Touch to obtain, otherwise will drop Cobblestone UNLESS it is a wooden pickaxe, then it drops nothing.

Cobblestone - requires Silk Touch to obtain, otherwise will drop Cobblestone UNLESS it is a wooden pickaxe, then it drops nothing.

Coal Ore - requires Silk Touch to obtain, otherwise will drop Coal item UNLESS it is a wooden pickaxe, then it drops nothing. XP orbs will still generate regardless

Iron Ore - will drop itself UNLESS it is a wooden OR Stone pickaxe, then it drops nothing.

Gravel - the drop rates for flint have been doubled, so flint is twice as easy to obtain now.

Logs, Planks, Wood, Stripped Logs, and Stripped Wood ( for all 8 wood types ) - Will drop nothing unless any tool is used.

Updated the following Tool recipe :

Stone Axe : 🪓
Can now be crafted in a 2x2 grid ( no longer needs a workbench)
Flint has replaced cobblestone in this recipe.
Obtain 3 flint and 1 stick to craft this in the player's inventory crafting grid.
Used to obtain wood, as it is impossible to obtain any wooden blocks by hand

Removed the following custom tool recipes :

Wooden Pickaxe :
Removed this custom crafting recipe, so now these can be crafted as usual.
Cannot be used to collect cobblestone, coal, or iron ore, due to the updated loot tables for these blocks.

Neither pickaxe argument is valid. Humans used sticks to break off bits of stone, and then those bits of stone to extract metals from stone. Thats how humans developed. It makes perfect sense.

I understand what you mean however what you're describing sounds more like using a wooden Mallet to strike a loosely bound gravel pile because there is no stick which can break solid Rock. So based on that , perhaps a recipe can be added for a wooden hammer which can produce small stones from gravel. It is something to consider so please provide more feedback and let me know what you think.

Thanks for trying out this datapack
