Original Post
I want to thank you all for the support and encouragement that i have received these past several months. As a means to thank you, i would like to start up a contest. Inspired by Venom's build contest, i am putting on a build contest of my own. As you all can see from my submissions (33 of the 41 projects), i am rather fond of skyscrapers. And lately, as i am working extensively on that part of the city, that is a lot of what i have been building in minecraft. So, rather fittingly, i am putting on a skyscraper contest.
The term "skyscraper" was used first at the end of the nineteenth century when steel frame buildings began to be erected in major cities. The Home Insurance Building of Chicago is often coined as the first, being 42m (138 ft) tall originally, and had 10 floors. Since then, buildings have grown significantly taller, as by the 1930s, a few buildings had exceeded 350m, and a decade into the 21st century, one building had exceeded 800m, with another, currently under construction, to be 1000m. Skyscrapers are a feat of engineering, man's conquering of gravity, and an attempt to permanently claim a portion of the sky. As you see, i have a sort of romanticized view of skyscrapers.
All flowery wording aside, this contest is to build a skyscraper, and we will use the nineteenth century definition of a skyscraper: a building 42m or taller. These constructions can be anything that you wish and any style from 12th century gothic church spires to ultra-modern parametrically designed eco-towers of the future, and anything in between. The only thing is, it must be tall.
I don't want these to be massive, so i will lay down a building plot restriction of 100 x 100 for your building (this does not include landscaping). This will hopefully give you the freedom to build however much you need

Judging
Your project will be judged on the following criteria:
Creativity/Originality (10 points)
You should try to push the boundaries of the design, what is unique. We don't want to see just a glass box. We want to see clever design ideas that really push what minecraft is capable of.
Quality of build (10 points)
Detail (10 points)
Concept (15 points)
We want to see that you put some thought into the design. What were you thinking when you built it, what was your intent with your design.? If you were making a recreation of a real world building, what was their design intent, what did you learn from it. A good idea is worth pursuing. You can present this in drawings or in writing.
Landscape (5 points)

Woo 2nd place! Congrats CaptainMangar and Bramboss1 on 1st and 3rd!
This was fun! It got my creativity flowing for more original buildings. I will look out for the next contest.

Woh, thanks, I am honored! I look forward to another contest like this!

Congrats to the winners!
@jduartemiller,
Count me in for a next contest (99% sure)
I keep an eye out for it, I mean quite some entries for an community challenge
and proper judging. That I find not often.
Oh and one question:
Could you put up the scores per judging criteria?
I am curious at what points I did well and what not.
And also to figure out how my gamble of a ''different'' style worked out.

This is the TechniCube entry. I know that this is late so if it's not considered I understand. Good luck to all!

I am deeply sorry I was unable to make the deadline. Large family troubles aroused which were obviously unforeseen. The server I had the build on, decided to do a host migration which lasted far longer than I expected (4 weeks). I look forward to participating in any future competition you wish to hold, and actually entering said competition. I will still be uploading the Skyscraper to my PMC page once completed. I wish the best of luck to all participants.
May the odds, be ever in your favour.

Current entries has been updated with this. The reason that the glass isn't showing up is probably because you are using stained glass, and the schemagic isn't updated to handle that yet. Give them time to update it, but it will take time. In the schematics themselves, it shouldn't be an issue

i have already extended this an extra four weeks, i'm sorry, but that was long enough. I do plan to do another contest. But, if you can hammer it out in a day (which is possible, i have done it a number of times with projects), try to enter it. You have until March 19th at 11:59 Pacific Standard Time (Day Light Savings Time - 7 GMT)
1
Oh and please give me 1 more week please!
1
İ was going to enter but its 17 march today and its night. im going to sleep after a few minutes and i cant make this in 1 day. İ have school, homework, etc.
1
Only two more days to submit, best to hurry, and best of luck to everyone.

These drawings don't have to be precise, pretty, or even accurately represent the final product. It just has to show that you were thinking of a concept of some sort before you set off. It can be simple so long as it conveys a point.
Also, if drawing is really turning you away that much from entering, you could always try your hand at recreating a real world building. The only thing that you would have to do is some research into the design (main concept and intent of the architect, some reference images, and if you can find them, some formal or conceptual diagrams)

This is making me not lean towards not participating since nearly everything I do buildingwise is pretty much spontaneous.

I will be away from internet access for a while, so if you get your entry in after this weekend, i will not be able to update the current entries until the contest closes. Do not worry, you still have 12 more days to submit.
1
Excellent. I look forward to your project.

Bohunk join the game

Only two more weeks. Can't wait to see everyone's projects.

mkay... I guess I can buil it in 1.8 using the CMDS but i'll use blocks that are 1.7.5 compatible
1
i would not have access to view it. 1.7.4 would be preferable.
* Revise: Just realized that 1.7.5 came out for download, and is the current version. Anything not compatible with this or earlier versions and if it cannot be viewed, it will not receive scores. Any features that do not work in these versions will also not contribute to the score.

one question what if we're building in 1.8 alpha? can that still be submitted?
1
oh wow 18 days i have enough time XD
1
I have some ideas for a future one, but if you can knock one out in the next 18 days, you can still be entered
1
I guess i came late to the party.... Will there be another competition like this or not?
because I enjoy building design and what not so maybe next time if there is a next time

Quick update:
Built the skyscraper. It isn't anything amazing but I quite like it.
I'm just waiting on the owner to send me the schematic file, so I should have by tonight/tomorrow.

As long as we can see it, that is fine.
Rules:
"11. All builds must include a schematic and/or world save"
Having one or the other is good, having both would be better, but i believe all the judges have the capability to view schematic files

Is it ok if I build it on a server then get the .schematic file for it? My singleplayer world got deleted so I'll have to begin again but at least I have no more issues with my .bin folder anymore.
1
if you win one, you should see the bronze, silver, and gold trophies. I modeled them after my Spires project
1
omg you really want people to participate! That trophy is awesome!

Just finished the pixel trophies. Here is the trophy for the participants

I might join
1
That's okay, you still have time to get it in. Deadline is March 19th at 11:59pm PST.

I started my skyscraper a few hours ago, it's taking me a while because of issues with my .bin folder but I'm making progress ;P
