i like it. i already have some ideas...
bored......
What you should be more concerned about 1.5 breaking is Modifications rather than Texture Packs
If what mojang keeps true with their API promise (yeah right) 1.5 will be even more destructive to large mods than any update since 1.3

oh shiz, man your right
A lot of mods took a long time to update when 1.3 came out; most, not even until 1.4!!! mainly because of the creative mod gui change, or was it somethign with the coding maybe, idk...
but if they did make an official API, then all the mods would like, have to go there :O then what would we do! wait til frikken 1.7? 1.8 even?

It's already bad enough that they're taking out stone slabs
They're not...
It's true they're not.
And to the OP and everyone else that thinks texturepacks will be broken:
Read MinecraftWiki, please, texturepacks that have the regular terrain and stuff will be 'auto-magically' (If the wiki or dinnerbone or someone never said automatically, although pretty much the same thing.) converted to the new 1.5 Texture Format.

Minecraft 1.5...
Pocket edition already has quartz, single nether brick (dropped from reactor) and stonecutters.
-snip- (found it )
I absolutely hate this change , for many reasons
1. Texture pack zips are going to filled to the brim with all the items and blocks
2 . I'll have to Update my texture pack...
and many more

You can super-easily update your pack by simply downloading Dinnerbone's unstitcher.
Wow Great Job Jeb
I noticed this breakage while watching a Vid by a youtuber by the name of Zistau he has a custom texture pack that appears to have a painterly base with mobs that appear (at least for the hostiles) to be from Norse Craft, he plays on the snapshot and his pack is a lag machine when force fed from the sheet format to the new files format.
no no no no the game automatically reconifgures the files to the new texture pack style. (I'm not sure this works on HD packs however)
At least they made a program to somewhat quickly fix them, I thought it would take forever.
They're doing what now?
To facilitate the modding API the texture pack format is going from being a single sheet to being each texture has it's own file. The good news is there will be more built in compatibility for 32x32 and 64x64 texture packs making less need for MCpatcher.
Also you can make pretty much any block texture animated and apparently because of some technical reason it wont lag much more after loading the texture pack.
So really texture packs wont be broken, in fact they will be improved as we can have all kinds off animated textures, making our games look nicer.
