Use/Make a resource pack
We are talking about this version, it didn't have support for resourcepacks or even texturepacks in form of in game menu.
I don't know how but what version is that?

You need graphic editing software supporting transparency, presonaly I recommend PaintDotNet - it's lightweight MS paint alternative supporting more image formats.
