Now for the story:

I knew my orders. I knew I had to obey them. The only thing I did not know, was what was about to happen. So here, I was, on top of a pristine, snowy mountain. Shivering, hungry, and tired. I looked down at the perfect white below and to my trusty gun. I knew that the peace would be over quite soon so I appreciated every moment. There was a light breeze and the crisp air made me even more relaxed, in to the moment even. And my mission was to assassinate my target... from three miles away.
My rangefinder was not faring much better, with frostbite setting in it was only a matter of time before we had to be lifted out. “Hey, John, how are you doing? “I asked in a quiet yet joking voice.
“Well, if you consider practically freezing to death doing well, I’m doing just fine” he retorted. I giggled to myself and thought, that person never loses his funny side, even if he is in a life or death situation. I told him we should get started and I got down on my stomach.
“Ok, just no yelling” he said. I rolled my eyes.
“I have been in this field for fifteen years, I think I know protocol.” I replied.
“Now, let’s get to work” I muttered while I lined up my sights with the spot where my target would walk. I slowed my breathing, getting ready to shoot in between heartbeats. Taking in the extreme accuracy of the image, I was ready.
After what seemed like an eternity, I saw my target. He was a middle aged, balding man with wisps of brown hair and a scraggly grey beard. Together, those two colors created quite an interesting sight. “Stop admiring the wildlife and shoot!” John intoned. I lined up my sights with his head and as time seemed to slow, it almost appeared that my finger had a mind of its own and I fired. I could feel the sound as a single wall hitting me. I could picture the bullet sailing towards its target, embedding itself in its enemy. After the smoke cleared and I came back to reality, John reminded me,
“You should probably check if he is dead”.
“Of course he is dead John, I shot him in the head” I replied with a sharp almost condescending tone. John said back, “Are you sure Roach? Because I think I still see movement”.
“Whaaa?“ I asked as I moved the scope to my face to see “he is alive...” I was flabbergasted, I shot and I killed, I had never missed in my whole career, except of course, now. The feeling of disappointment was immense. I did not mind killing, but injuring, that made my stomach turn.
After a long time of arguing and thinking, I had decided. “I’m going down John,” I said, “I should finish this job.” I started down the daunting mountain. Spikes of ice, large rocks, I had never been so nervous in my life, even the time when I had breached a high security facility to finish someone off.
“Well, now I’m alone” I said to myself “there’s nothing to worry about... I have done worse and harder.” I reminded myself. However, In the back of my mind, although I did not know why, was a feeling of extreme anxiousness and worry. As I got closer to the hill’s bottom, the scene started to unravel. There was the crimson color of blood soaking into the snow dying it a sickly red color; there was a large, gaping hole in the man’s shoulder, and fragments of bone sticking out of his shirt. The scene was revolting. As a sniper, I almost never get close enough to my target to see this much detail so this was horrible. The whole thing seemed surreal. The man seemed almost calm, despite the fact that he was in extreme pain. As I walked closer to the site, Instead of the expected crawling away and yelling, the man just stared at me.
“Why me?” he asked. “Why did it have to be me?” he intoned again in a completely calm tone. Of course, I said nothing but he continued on, “I have lived a wonderful life of riches so kill me if you must. I have done what I have needed to.” I will never forget that statement, I thought as I came in for the kill. I will never forget the sound I heard when I stabbed him. Utter silence. Horrible, horrible silence.
“It is time for a change,” I yelled, breaking the uncomfortable calm “I have served for long enough, I am DONE” the last word echoed around the valley getting quieter and quieter as I started towards the mountain, preparing to confront with my boss.
I knew my orders. I knew I had to obey them. Only this time, they were from me.
