DDOS Attacks [Whats Your Solutions?]
So what are your methods to preventing a ddos attack of your server, do you use a plugin, do you do anything crazy? What do the big servers use. Please help because some retarded kids think they know how to do it, but make everyone have a bad day in the end and just make things slower.
Have fun.

thanks guys
Big servers will most likely have a dedicated server, which will have DDoS protection built in.
Most hosts today have DDoS protection anyways.

There's not way of using a plugin for DDoS protection.
I would go with getting a VPS with DDoS filtering, then use a tcptunnel or GRE tunnel to forward packets to the backend/actual server. This way in DDoS attacks, the frontend proxy server gets attacked instead of the server running minecraft. You could also set up multiple proxies pointing to the backend server so people can connect even when one of the proxies are getting attacked. This is a lot cheaper than professional DDoS protection, it's around $45 a year compared to $100+ a month.

It depends on what type of ddos. A plugin would only work if the ddos is actually connecting to minecraft. Otherwise do the same as a standard ddos attack. There may be a way to determine real traffic from ddos traffic. Make sure your routers are locked down as much as possible ie. ignore ICMP pings, forward only the ports you need. If you are hosted with someone else, contact them and they should be able to help. If the ddos is minecraft based then maybe change the connection throttle and maybe switch to spigot (bukkit derivative) to speed thing up a bit to compensate (you should be doing this anyway).
