Ok let me explain, ok if you want a server, and your friend is in the same location they can connect to your server, although if your friend is say at his house with a different IP adress, he how cannot connect your server. To allow just a server at your house, download a sever normally from Minecraft.net run it, and go to DirectConnect and type in localhost. Then you will connect to your local host Minecrat server.

For this to work, you must be at the same location.

If your friend shall connect from your house find your local ip as I showed you, and then
1. download craftbukkit.jar from dl.bukkit.org
2. open textedit
3. paste this(basically runs the jar as a java server)
#!/bin/bash
cd "$( dirname "$0" )"
java -server -Xmx2G -jar ./craftbukkit.jar

4. replace the 2 in -Xmx2G with how much ram you would like to allocate
5. make sure the server jar is named craftbukkit.jar
6. In textedit go to Format --> Make plain text
7. Save as start.command (or something else with the extension .command)
8. Open that with terminal
9. Have your friend connect with the local ip address

--Hope this helps

Running a server on a computer that is connected to you internet will ALWAYS use your Internet. It is impossible for it not to.

What do you mean by "dont have to connect to your internet"
If you are running a server that is not LAN they must connect to your internet

If you want your friend or someone else to connect who is not on your LAN then you have to port-foward. This should not be hard as there are many tutorials. If your friend is at your house or something find the local ip of the computer runnung the server and put that in. To find the local ip go to System Preferences --> Network

Ok, Im not for sure exactly what a LAN-Server is, but a regular Minecraft Server with my knowledge will not take up Internet, it will use internet but not take it up. To run a Minecraft Server just portforward you router, you could find this here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_forwarding Then you could find your IP, connect to the sever, assure anybody else can connect. Then you have your server. If this helped any, please tell me!
