I host a private server for my friends, using Hamachi. Recently, I found that at random points, with as few as one person on, my memory usage spiked to like 100 megs!

To solve this, I allocated 2 gigs, by doing this:

Guess what keeps happening now!

Could it be because the world file is so big? It's like 300 megabytes (It's huge!)
Just to prove it:

Here's my properties:

Please help me! Do I need more RAM? Is it because I run it on the same computer that I run Minecraft itself on?

I have never experienced lag/memory issues with a server before. I'm stumped.

And something else came to mind. Maybe the server and Minecraft are using the same core and thus fighting for processing resources.

My World File is 2gigs and i have it on a server It doesn't Create major lag

My other options are
Options 1) Get Bukkit + Install Mobcompressor + NoLagg

Options 2) Search High and Low For Redstone Spammers

Options 3) Try not to Run Minecraft Client and Server on the same Computer

Options 4) Upgrade Computer or whatever your running it on

Options 5) Virus Scan

Options 6) Update Java And Remove older Versions

You know, that's a good point, but I don't think that is the problem. It is way too sporadic for it to be a problem with the game itself. I think my world file is too large. Its 300 megabytes for Dolores's sake! But I solved my problem now. My server files are now stored on a RAMdisk.

Ok, my cores were not the problem, or so it seems. I need options.

300 mbs is what 3 people ususally use... if you have ur rendering distance on far and you have alot of plugins it goes up really fast...

Yeah. I have the view distance on 15 for one thing. But I'm running vanilla.
I think my processor cores were the problem.

You know, not that I really need too much help anymore or anything, but I really would've liked to hear from someone.

Why does it seem like everything I make is ignored?
