How do I get the steve skin in my skin editor? I want to edit the skin

I don't think one can directly.
However, one can download a steve skin png from elsewhere and upload that to use as the base for your creation…
Try searching steve.png if you can't easily find it. The results may (or may not) be exactly the official in-game version, but this ought not matter as you'll be modifying it anyway.

i dont think thats how it works
That is the workaround I've been using given that the Steve and Alex skin options (the four options above the line above Allay) don't have a "Use Default Texture Button".
just look at my top comment so you dont do that anymore (not the replies)
I don't know how it works for you, but when I do that (New Skin / steve / click 'base color' / choose color) the result is a steve model filled with that color not the default steve texture i.e. 
ahh thought he wanted the base of steve sorry
