There seems to be a lot of discourse about which layer is the best to mine in as of 1.18. It seems Y11 is no longer a trusted layer. I've tried it myself and I swear I'm just going through mountains of cobblestone (even iron seems a bit scarce in this layer). Most people seem to agree Y-59 is the new sweet spot for mining. It seems diamond now spawns more frequently the closer you are to bedrock. At this deep, you get a decent amount of redstone as well, though gold is pretty much absent here. I should point out that at this level you're collecting deepslate by the hundreds, which means it takes longer to mine and it's twice the impact on your pickaxe. I've had decent luck finding diamonds in this layer, though they are still pretty rare to come across. On average, I find 4 diamonds every 20 minutes of mining. 12 diamonds an hour on average? That's pretty good.
However, I'm curious to know if anyone else has found a particular layer that holds the most diamonds. Maybe I've got it all wrong and I have to go farther up. Also, how's your luck finding diamonds in caves? For me, this method is even harder since you have to fight your way through a lot of hostile mobs, but it saves you a mighty amount of mining. Curious to know what everyone's experience has been.

The majority of the diamond ores generate at y-level -59 or -58, so that's the best place to mine
Also, you're less likely to find an 8 vein of diamonds in a cave in 1.18 than in 1.17, as they made it so that they are less likely to be exposed to air

clone ~ ~1 ~ ~~1 ~ XXX XXX XXX in command block with whichever Ore you like atop of it. Best place to mine is wherever XXX XXX XXX is on an observer triggering said command block :)
hmm im unsure they do seem quite scattered in 1.18
