Set a custom ID for an item on a server or singleplayer?

Hi guys!
So this is my second time writing this -_- I clicked submit but PMC was offline...
Anyway.
I want to know if it's possible to set a Custom ID for an item on singleplayer or on a server.
*Example*
I want to sell or place in a kit a written book, a player head, or even a re-named item. The problem is I can't for the life of me figure out how I can do this. About a year ago I was able to sell a written book (With essentials) but I can't begin to think how I did it.
I know that there are a few plugins that you can place custom items in a kit, or sell written books. But I would very much like to be able to get the ID.
So my question is, is it possible? If not would you like to see it in a future update?

Kind of I guess. I mean like me trying to get the ID from a book I have written, so it creates it's own ID. If that makes sense

Just have your code check for NBT tags. I'm not sure how to accomplish this, but I know for a fact that it's possible.

What do you mean? Do you mean like renaming in an anvil?
