Is it alright to post stuff that you didn't make? Like the guy who posted the Hey0 mod. Now he's going to get so many views but he didn't make that. I think those people should get it rough. Or else what's the point of the report button?

Yah, that's fine death. I know you were not trying to take credit. Not a personal thing at all. Site could quickly become a major mess if everyone started submitted others work though. Say the original author comes to the site later, submits their work again or notices it's already been submitted and gets upset. It's just better if we submit our own stuff.

Now, a review / intro to hey0 (or other complex mods) could be an awesome blog post.

It appears it's still a problem. I found 3 plagiarized posts today. Skins are copied so much I can't keep track of em.

Mostly Mods are plagiarized.

I agree. I think that some of the people that upload hundreds of skins just blind copy-paste skins off of some of the skin repositories that are available online. Mods seem to be mostly non-original as well. I have noticed no plagiarism with projects so far and i don't think that the blog format really allows for plagiarism. Servers would be pretty hard to plagiarize as well, since most times people. Textures mostly seem to be good, though I am not sure how original they all are. I know a large portion of the one that I deprecated since the most recent update was someone else's work that I modified and updated a few times. I think that we probably don't really need a mod section, since most mods are posted on the regular forums where they get a wider view, or are things like bukkit plugins. Since both of those are already well-known avenues for mods, I see no real reason for a submission section, though having a forum section where people can point out mods that they have discovered or made would be nice. I am probably rambling now but I will let you know if I see anything else.

Yeah people should post stuff like hMod in the forums.

Yeah, I don't think a mods section is needed. There are 6 mods currently, and they get plagiarized often. Like INVEdit.

I think there should definitely be a small notice about unoriginal content. Some people even admit that they didn't make stuff but post it just to promote it.

Can we do something about the Mods section? Pretty much everything in there is unoriginal content. Some have given credit to the original creators but, what's the point of that? If I was a mod maker and heard I could post my mod here, then found my mod was already here, posted by someone else, credit or no credit I'd be pissed. Maybe, i have no idea why, the mod creator didn't want his mod on multiple forums/communities or, maybe, again no idea why, they just don't like PMC and don't want their mod here. Either way, it should be up to the mod creator. Just seems posting others creation on PMC, credit or not, is counterproductive in our community that is infinitely creative and constructive.

I wouldn't want to see the Mods section go, there are original posts there, and we want to see that grow. Since we have a few new admins, I wonder if the Mods section could be a submission process. The only thing that would change is instead of publishing live, mod submissions would be sent to an admins private forum or pm inbox and must be approved by at least one admin before it goes live.

I realize that creates some extra duty on the part of our admins in that they'll have to investigate but, doesn't seem like there's too many mod submissions to sort through and usually a quick search of Minecraft Forums does the trick or, maybe a PM or email to the mod creator at most. Seems possible to me. Phony Texture Packs are easily recognized and usually voted down pretty quick. Skins seem to be the same way, hard to tell there's so many. I haven't really seen any hijacked Projects or Servers yet. It'd be nice to see if the Mods section could be streamlined in some way because it, like everything else on PMC, is THE BEST way to share your creations with the Minecraft community and we want all those who visit to see that!

A few of the phony mods on PMC:

Yeah I already posted a discussion in the moderator forum. I wanna crack-down on the mods but we still don't have any power over submissions. I told a guy to not plagiarize and he called me a dumb-ass. I don't think he realized I was a mod, Cyprezz we might need the coloured names in submissions too.

Yah I agree, we'll have to do some house cleaning and then follow up with personally inviting mod creators. Thanks for the list.

Yep to the colored names / mod titles on the main site too. I will code us the mod tools & unique titles next week. I'll also finally add a note to the submission form saying "Only upload original content or invite the original creator if you really want the mod here" Something to that affect. Anyone have better wording? Needs to be short and to the point but get the two points across, upload original content or invite the original creator.

You know, I agree that the original creators of the mods should have the right to choose where his mod should be advertised/hosted and where not. However I stumbled across some mods through sites like mcxc, minecraftwb or planetminecraft. I don't think I'd ever found them in the Minecraftforum. So I'm not sure if it's the best way to just disallow people to upload stuff they didn't create. :/

I see what your saying Morrolan but I think there's far greater value in having the actual creators share their content even if it takes more work to get it going. The creators are going to have much better descriptions of their own mods and actually be able to keep them updated. The problem gets even worse when mutliple people submit the same mod and none of them created it.j

I haven't invited mod creators to share their work here yet. That section gets a ton of traffic, it would be great exposure for them. I just don't think they're aware.

I think that the wording for the submissions warning is pretty good (and should be applied to all submissions, not just mods) with a small change. I think that the wording below is simpler and is about the same length as the original, but it makes it more direct to not upload what you did not make. Should probably have something like this somewhere on the join portion of the website too.
"Only upload content that you created. If you did not create it, invite the author to join PMC so that they can share it."

-=Off topic section (kinda)=-

Agreed, though it was more like PMC was the reason that I started posting my project, since it is the perfect framework and platform for it. Also, I am glad to be an actual part of the community and not just some name on a post. Knowing that some of the features on this site are here by my suggestion and being one of the first round of official moderators is something that lets me know (at least that first part, who knows what i did for the second) that this is a community worth the effort that is put into it, and I have had very few problems hosting the server that is recommended by 4/4 Mods of PMC, and those are usually lover's quarrels or omissions on my part. Below is what I wanted to post in the mod owners please read thread about plagerized content, but since this thread has a similar goal, I will post it here. This was shown to the other mods before posting, and it received no comments for or against my wording. Cyprezz, please edit the bottom paragraph if it is wrong.

-=On topic Section=-

If you find a project, mod, skin, insert submission type here, that has been uploaded by someone who is not the original creator, please find proof by finding the original creator. If you have proof that a submission is someone else's work, please use the report button (small flag) located in the stats section of a submission and include the links to the information you have found. If you have uploaded something that was not your original creation but you have permission to upload it elsewhere, link to that permission within the description of the submission. A message from the author saying support my submission/mod/skin/whatever is not permission, nor is something saying spread the word. If you would like that item to be on Planet Minecraft, be awesome and invite the creator to join our community of awesome people.

I got a sundial once. It is awesome, but my watch only works when i am facing north and it is brightly lit outside. Also, short note, if the "only post your work" note at the top of a submission could be made larger, since there are still people that are posting stuff that isn't theirs. Example is someone posted a skin about an hour ago that they stated wasn't theirs. Politely asked to take it down, but I think it would probably be better to make it more obvious on the submission to not upload what is not yours. Also, for skins at least, could you run a hash on the uploaded file and compare it against the hashes of the other skins, to prevent duplicates. Don't really forsee collisions, but it would also return a link to the submission that has the same hash in case someone comes to upload their skin and someone already uploaded the same skin. I know that some people will just change a single pixel to get it accepted, but that is what the moderators are for. Anyway, just some late night thoughts.

What do you all think about skins made using things like http://minecraft.decx.org/ All you have to do is a few clicks and you have a new skin. Should we allow people to post skins on PMC that they've made this way? Or should we ask them not to? Personally I don't like it.

Well part of the problem is Minecraft's wide demographic. There's hundreds of idiotic 12 year old kids who post stupid things all over this site. If I see another "Giant Creeper" (or rather "gant creper") in the projects section I might just build my own out of green cloth for the sole purpose of burning it down in anger.

I see most of it in the skins section and texture pack section. There's dozens of copies of skins that are just textures from the game. When these people see something they like, they repost it. -_-
And in the texture pack section? I honestly don't think that people should be taking credit for custom Painterly packs.

Swarmer2010BTW there are many honeydew(from yogscast) skins. They're on the first few pages of popular skins.

Ironically, that's not even a skin specifically for Honeydew. It's a dwarf skin that was released on the skindex a ways back.

I am glad to see that some of the community is moderating their own submissions when they realize that we do not want people to post what is not theirs. charlie, every community for creativity will have a dirth of similar work that is quick and easy, that is why PMC has the upvote system. If you go to the projects page and change the sorting to most upvotes, you will see some of the most impressive projects that people have uploaded, including my main project at number 4 and Cyprezz's scorpion fortress at number 3. The current number one is so amazing that i can't even begin to think mine will ever be in the #1 slot again. That coupled with the fact that it nearly tripled the previous record for upvotes and has almost double the second place anyway.
