NOTE: This is aimed towards the "texture packs" section, but may also be applicable to other sections, especially "everlasting work" sections like mods.

You basically only get a submission on the pop-reel once, which grants you a one-time huge download spike. This means that in order to get views/downloads, you need to update your submission. I don't know about other categories, but in the "texture packs" section it's very competitive, with people who update just about every day (or every other day) with a few minor (and ambiguous) changes. It's honestly hard to keep up with that, especially if you try to make larger, more impressive updates. I'd like to suggest a few things that would not only allow users who put more work in to show that (for instance, snapshot support), but also ways to allow users to find content they like easier.

There should be a more intuitive tag system with pre-made tags that authors could define their submission with to help users find it if that's what sort of things they're looking for directly without needing it in search.

Examples of tags:

  • bright
  • dark
  • smooth
  • detailed
  • shaded
  • happy
  • scary
  • themed
  • holiday

In addition to normal tags, there should be a dedicated tag for snapshot support. 1 snapshot version can be chosen for a tag, and when the next stable version comes out, the older snapshot tags are no longer searchable.

The "textures modified" options should be changed to "resources included" and add sounds, animations, shaders, language, MCpatcher support, and models as options. This category would also be change to add pre-defined tags rather than adding them to custom tags.

This tag system would allow you to refine your viewing of the section similar to the refinement there is now, only you would be able to select multiple tags rather than just one (the exception being the "snapshot support" tag).

There also should be some sort of "recommended" list of items that refreshes monthly. Basically, this would be like a pop reel that you can be on more than once. At the start of each month, it was choose a large number of submissions that meet certain criteria:

  • was not on the list previous month
  • has existed more than a few months
  • has over 50 diamonds
  • had under 40,000 in the previous month
  • supports the newest Minecraft version
  • has been updated in the last 6 months
  • does not have too high of a download-to-age ration (in other words, isn't 365 days old with 183-365 updates,)

What it chooses would be mostly random, but also possibly on diamond/download ratios, view/download ratios, comments, etc. The main goal of this is to promote deserving content that doesn't get tons of downloads already, as well as reduce the impact of constantly updated submission, and discourage update log abuse.

More download management. Allow a larger number of main downloads, such as 5-10 (number allowed depends on level? possibly mod approval in some cases), so users can supply users with alternate mirrors, alternate pack versions (1.7, 1.8, holiday themed), alternate resolutions, or addons. This will allow those downloads to count towards stats (1 per IP still, though), make it so downloads are all in one place (rather than in the description somewhere) and will make it so users can have 1 submission with more download links rather than 5 different submissions (this is troublesome when they all get updated at once, I'm looking at you HD pack makers).

More reel management. Allow images from outside sites like imgur to be used instead of the now 15-limit PMC downscaled ones. Make only the 1st image load until user interacts with the image reel.

Instead of allowing 1 youtube video that starts on the reel rather than an image, make a video tab! Allow more than one video to be added, and re-organized similar to images.

Probably not all of it. But maybe a little of it, so what's the harm in suggesting it?
