Think of it more as bronze, rather than gold. Also, a good theme fit would be springs, coils, gears, pistons, and such. Think of it as what we imagine to have in the future, built with materials they had about 200-300 years ago.

I think as long as you don't skin an actual picture it's fine, but if it can help and influence your understanding of the subject that would be fine.

If your up for watching an animated movie Steamboy is basically a steampunk film.

What i could suggest is reading up on what steam punk is and get a good feel for the theme. If you like anime steamboy is a great movie example of steampunk. I personally was influenced by HG Wells and the Full metal alchemist movie. If you can think of something really original you'll score +points i'd imagine.

I think I'd get away with saying this, if you were to take a look at something modern day and thing to yourself what would this look like if it were powered by steam or steam was it main source of energy. Or if you asked a scientist who lived in Victorian times to draw you something from modern day, what would they show you

If you google image steampunk your sure to find pictures of what the general idea of steampunk is.
