Hi All...
I'm called MamaDragon.
My sons, LilDragon and WolfGuide, have been pestering me to try out this game called MineCraft. Well, Mama has tried it out, found it to be fun enough to keep playing it, and I'm trying to learn more about it.

In the process of trying to find a User's Manual for newbies, I found several forums. After giving them all a quick glance, and reading a few posts, I decided this was the best/ most reliable of them all, so here I am, a Newbie looking to learn.

We live in South Arkansas, so there's little enough to do. We don't know enough local gamers to put together AD&D games, and online playing isn't exactly safe for kids anymore either. One son is disabled, so I'm more protective of him than I would be otherwise.

I'm trying to get a closed/home server up and going for the family, and maybe a couple visiting friends to play on the LAN. I have a zillion questions, and I'll try to post them in the appropriate categories.

It's Nice To Meet Y'All, and I'll talk to you around the boards.

Hi MamaDragon,
I'm GeekyDaddy. I too was introduced to Minecraft by my son. Since then I have made my own server. My son and his friends play there from time to time. I would like to also have a mature person to play minecraft with.

If you're interested then e-mail me. geekydaddy255 at gmail dot com

Sorry for the delay in responding - Life Happens!.

WhiteRawr- No, I was meaning 3-4-5 laptops out in the play-room/garage with kids on cushions, munchies at the ready. No internet needed. A Totally closed system.

(I've allowed what should have been a "secure access" and a visitor ended up cracking thru it, and landing my only computer on several porn lists. Had to wipe the hard drive, change my email, and get a new ISP. NOT a pleasant experience, and one I have no wish to even remotely come close to repeating. Therefore, friends are welcome to visit, they can NOT use our internet for any reason at any time.)

Yes, at present, we're using the LAN settings for the game and my desktop for the base/host. The LAN setup is working for now, and as we grow in the game, we'll be better able to judge exactly what it is we DO need to get set up.

Like I said earlier, eventually, I want to get a dedicated "Game Computer" for all their games, and probably will install some kind of server setup after I've learned what is which, and the best for our situation. Not to mention, best graphics/audio setup for what they (and hubby) like to play.

Mentioned already above, whitelisting your server would make it so theres no remote possibility of someone you don't want to be accessing your server to access it.

klmmc13No offense, and I don't know where you live, but if you can rent a full server for only $3.00 USD a month, I'd like to sign up.... here just buying time on someone else's server is sold per hour clock time, [when you sign in till when you sign off] and truthfully, would end up more than my car payment each month.

No offense taken Generally those places are a set payment each month though, and they're a worldwide thing. I live in the UK and rent from the place I mentioned above for £4 a month (EU location) no matter how much / little I play on it.

klmmc13When you turn loose 4 or more teenagers with their own MC/game server.... they'd be on for days

You could have complete control over when the server's on. They just email you a password and username and only you would be able to log in. From there it's really easy to just hit a "stop" button at the top of the page and the server would go off.

Sorry if this sounds like I'm trying to force you into it; I just wanted to clarify anything that could've been misunderstood
On that note, sorry if I've misunderstood anything you've written! ^-^

*Edit*: Just read over the first bit of your reply; I'm assuming you used the LAN options in-game? I think you need something different anyway if you want their friends to be able to play with them (the type that requires Hamachi and Port-Forwarding)

Thank you All for the warm welcome.

WhiteRawr- I guess I mis-spoke.... it won't be a "regular server". We've already played (the three of us) on my LAN using my personal desktop as the root/base for the game.
Ultimate goal is for them to be able to play with a few friends on a dedicated computer NOT ON THE INTERNET.

No offense, and I don't know where you live, but if you can rent a full server for only $3.00 USD a month, I'd like to sign up.... here just buying time on someone else's server is sold per hour clock time, [when you sign in till when you sign off] and truthfully, would end up more than my car payment each month.

When you turn loose 4 or more teenagers with their own MC/game server.... they'd be on for days (literally), and only come up/out for food&drinks, and sleep only when they can't keep their eyes open anymore. I know alot of Old School Gamers who are the same way when they are "On Campaign."

If I let them have Internet Connect.... they'd be on every minute they weren't doing school-work or sleeping.... Not happening if I can find a better way.... (sorry guys, there ARE other things in life than gaming and I don't have the bandwidth to support an Internet connect for gaming anyway. DSL in the sticks is little better than dial-up.

Have a Great Sunday..

Welcome

Best way to get a server set up for them to play on would probably be to rent one. They're not particularly dear, and you can set it to "Whitelist" names (only people who you specify will be able to join the server). You can get a 12 slot server for only $3 a month, and - in my opinion - it's way quicker and easier than setting up your own.
(I use this host for my own server - https://ggservers.net/minecrafthosting.html)

That being said, if you google "Setting up a Hamachi Minecraft Server" there are loads of tutorials guiding you through the steps of creating a free server, but anyone joining will need to have Hamachi and be in your group (I don't know much about this, because last time I got too frustrated with it to bother).

As for safety on other servers, most of them are pretty safe. Most servers have staff on there to prevent rude/inappropriate things happening - especially the 'big' servers

Hope I helped! ^-^
