Can't reach a single MC server?

Hello.
I'm not new to minecraft, nor am I new to networking and such. But about a month ago, whenever I put in a minecraft server address, (that isn't mine) it ALWAYS say "Can't reach server." I know that this could be due to the fact that the server might be down, but I tried about 10 different "24/7" server addresses, none showed up. Now, for some odd reason, whenever I HOST a server, my minecraft can see it and it let's me play on it. I'm not currently hosting one right now, though.
Also, (forgive me, I'm poor :P) I use mineshafter, if anyone has ever heard of it. It's like free minecraft. I was able to play on servers for about 6 - 8 months, but now they just don't work. Can anyone help? Is there a fix? I have found topics regarding this on other websites, but none had an answer. Thank you in advance.

Mineshafter does not allow you to play on other's servers, only your own server. Try to play on cracked servers instead. And if you want to play on servers, just get enough money and buy mc.
