What's the purpose of banners? How do you use them and why?

it'll be really cool for Large-group pvp servers (Towny nations, or large factions). Can give you a nice thing to stick in the middle of your defeated enemy's base to signify your victory I guess.
They just look cool too imo. Lots of combos.
