Hey DD!
Do you think limiting yourself is the key to bring out something new and surprising in terms of skinning?... What are your thoughts on the matter?Limiting myself definitely helped me, but the opposite can be said for others - like those who use very simplistic shading, for example. I think branching out in all facets (shading, subject, tone/hue, etc) is essentially the only way to improve, since you're pushing yourself to try new things and you're also finding what sticks. But at the end of the day, you need to find a balance between pushing yourself and enjoying what you're doing - skinning is meant to be fun!
For me, in terms of what I could do to branch out, I
could very well make non-human skins if I need/want to, but I don't feel the need, since they're not things I'm particularly interested in making.
Do you think something that'd be out of your comfort zone would be to make a skin without a reference picture to go by? Is it something you find more difficult, or is it just all the same? It's not that I find making skins without a reference more difficult, per se, it's just that I don't feel my skins turn out very well without a reference. Using a reference, even if it's something I drew, helps me gauge what needs to go where and what the colours should be. Simply put, if I'm not using a reference image I feel as if my skin has no direction.
I'm a very visual person, so I like to see things laid out before me as something to work towards. If you take a look at some of my very old skins, such as
this,
this, and
this, you can really tell that I had no clue what I was making and was just going with the flow. If you compare those to some of my new(er) skins, such as
this,
this, and
this, you can see that it's not just about the shading improving, it's about my understanding of character design (when following my own art) and art in general taking shape and making the skins more coherent/just plain nicer to look at.
Thing is, as I got better at art I got better at skinning too. Even though I wasn't making skins as frequently, I learned how to make my skins look better by using better colours, motifs, etc.
Hope that answers your questions! Feel free to ask more if you have any.
