What a piece of cake! Take a look at this wonderful medieval world built by Colfetters, presented in a lovely cinematic by billoxiboy, underlined with music by Peter Crowley.

Bit of a proud moment with this video....getting fractionally better with each one. I'm a Newb at this, I'm the first to admit. First time I've done a video for someone else's build....heart in my throat moment as I pressed that "Publish" button.
Mind you, I had exceptional material to work with. I want to thank COLFETTERS for his trust ....and blind faith. I also want to thank our Fearless Leader Cyprezz....without whose tireless work; our supportive community simply would not be. I invite you to check out COLFETTERS' Llynworrth Castle Reforged...

THEORY OF PROPORTION - part 1: Arches

During the last days I spent some time watching various projects in PMC (especially those of ancient style) and I realized that many users did not follow the rules of the Theory of Proportions.
First of all I premise that this is only a suggestion/advice, everyone is free to build as he/she want.

I decided to start with arches, beacause I think it is the most neglected thing in proportions.

According to the theory of proportions, the height of an arch has to be about
widht × 1,6 for the Golden Ratio (or at most × 2) semicircle included.
This ratio was fundamental in Greek and Roman architecture and was also used again during the Renaissance.
The Golden Ratio is indicated with the letter φ (phi) of the Greek alphabet.

Below is an image (modified by me) explaining the Golden Ratio applied to a Roman Arch (Arco di Traiano a Benevento - taken from "I monumenti e le opere d'arte della città di Benevento" by Almerico Meomartini, 1889)

My apologies for an obvious online absence of late. (This includes my lack of visits to all of my subscribers). Sometimes life gets in the way and I can't get anywhere near the "ON" button on my computer. Let alone put a block to another block and call it Minecraft. Bills to pay....mouths to feed....etc...etc.

In part... the lack of online presence has also been due to an attempted landscape design; I am currently undertaking. It is a design that has enchanted me for years. The design is that of a bountiful and luxuriant Orchard landscape. Perhaps of the Napa Valley - California. Or Henan Province, China, even the Murray River, Australia.

To date, I have created hand-planted aboreal representations of realistic Pine Forests and other naturalistic landscapes. All of which can be adequately generated by such software as worldmachine etc. But none have been as difficult and challenging in creating - as a "Hand Planted Orchard Landscape".

Here are some images I've been working on...

With in Flight to the Citadel - I have created the farm fields that feed the populous of The Citadel. Embracing the intricacies and textures of patterning, to produce a visual representation of a patchwork quilt.

The diligent and faithful orchard attendants live in a neighbouring hanging village.

The next update for my ressource pack is now available. A few more decorational textures are not complete yet and will be included in the next update. Instead you get some sandstone, gold and stone brick variants which fit perfectly into this update. Enjoy!

Not yet. The next update will include a few more textures of this kind. I hope to be done with it in about 4-5 weeks.

Finally released the next update for my unfoved ressource pack. It includes all promoted stone and cobble textures. Took me long enough and still lacks a few more variants of stone like walls, mossy stones and monstereggs. I will add them in one of the following updates.

The next update of my ressource pack is getting in sight. The polished versions of diorite and granite are done. And I have only one more block on the list before releasing the stone update which will include cobble blocks, different rock and stone textures for an all natural look of your minecraft world and of course granite, andesite and diorite. Here's a sneak preview of the polished diorite.

Thanks Firesword. I was considering your ideas about granite in general and the color of it in the post below. So I decided to create not only one polished block - the (red) granite but also a grey version and bind it to polished diorite. However, the polished andesite block was used for a 2x1 stone block. Might post a picture of it later.

Is it rather rough granite or clay?

It's a pretty close shot of polished granite. The raw stone looks like this. I made a texture close to that but ingame it looked blurry from a distance. Maybe I will try to add some red inclusions to the texture from my lower wall post to at least indicate something like red granite. That would also make it easier to mix different stone textures with each other.

By the way it is most likely that I will not create a version of polished red granite. I think I will have only one version of polished stone - a dark gray one - and bind it either to the polished andesite or diorite block id. Mojangs polished Granite/Andesite/Diorite blocks are actually one texture in different colors. For some blocks that makes surely sense, because you might want to mix them with each other - just like raw stone does in nature. But for blocks like the polished one I think it's really a waste of block id's - especially in MC versions above 1.7.

Ok, did not know you were trying to put red granite there. Probably. a few darker spots - both in dark red and dark gray tones.

I hope as always my english is understandable.

Thanks for your feedback Firesword. I might have to rethink it.

Generelly I would design granite as a dark gray stone - just like in my wall post below - but Mojang delivered red granite to us which is of course a possible variance of granite. And that's why I tried to create a red stone for granite.

But when the texture was finally done it appeared ingame more like kind of mesa stone stone. That's why I thought I might use it as (hardened) clay instead.

Never thought I'd be diamonding a simple cobblestone texture, but darn if that isn't one pretty wall. Gotta go with what springstof said below; it took me a while to even realize that was a texture on a Minecraft model; I had to click on the image to realize it wasn't a picture of a real wall you were using as reference...
