My first good experience in a multiplayer server after playing on several ones, where I pass from online/offline servers due to time zones, no admins around when the server is on, and when the admins were online it looks that only helps regular players and not the new ones.
In Pvp-Legends I found a great playerbase, friendly but not babysitters where they encourage that asking for free items is a no no, as well as a full time dedicated fast-server and admins that look for fairness gameplay for all, pros and newbies.
They give you a headstart but not with items which you must craft yourself (after all this is a true survival-pvp-grief allowed server), you must run, getting away as fast as possible from the spawn point because the "hunt has begun!"
Anyways that was my first impression playing with PvP-Legends, and if this is not enough for you, they are testing right now a super extra hard mode modded server, as far as I know playing there will be your final test as a minecrafter.
