Without rehashing what's already been said, mainstream music (for me at least) does suck and requires only a basic understanding of computer software. But that's only mainstream.
Take, for instance, the band Disturbed. I like listening to bands like Mötley Crüe, ZZ Top, and Van Halen (all rock bands of the 70s/80s), but Disturbed is easily among my favorites. Why is this relevant? Their most recent album Asylum came out in 2010, right when most claim the music industry sucked harder exponentially, and it's no disappointment. My point is this: if it is possible for a person to appreciate both hits from when music was "good" (in quotes because opinions differ) and a modern band, not all modern music sucks, just the mainstream. I still have yet to hear a single Disturbed song on the radio, probably because of the bad reputation that metal bands similar to it have collected.
