As a server owner, I agree with this Also, Jeb, start working more closely with Bukkit, and time your releases to be simultaneous.

I'm not sure I understand the context. Do you mean in terms of writing a plugin, or what? As far as I understand you'd need a plugin to allow Pex to update a player's permissions by clicking a sign. Correct me if I'm wrong, anyone, but I don't think Pex allows you to do that right out of the box.

I've always hoped we could attract more adult players to our server. Unfortunately, there are just SO many younger Minecraft players that it's kind of like searching for needles in a haystack. What you're doing here on this forum post is probably your best bet. But if you're going to try to attract lots of people to the server, you'll end up just running into the general demographic problem, and so you kind of have to choose between one or the other: A select group of people that you meet slowly over time, or a large public server where everyone's welcome.

You could check out some of the thousands of multiplayer servers out there. More fun to play with others, anyways.

The Bukkit peeps and Mojang may have finally learned to work together and do simultaneous updates, by then!

The "program" you're going to use is a Java compiler/editor called Eclipse. It takes quite a bit more than just installing Eclipse, however, and just getting Eclipse set up in your environment may be challenging. The better place to start would be "How do I write any program whatsoever in Java." The journey in programming begins there...

I want the Bukkit team and Mojang to realize they're on the same team, and to release simultaneous updates, rather than this multi-year long lack of communication/teamwork between the two. Would make sense, wouldn't it? Maybe things making sense is too much to ask, though...

Probably the first time we got more than 100 players on the server Mumausserver.com has been lucky to have survived for more than 2 years, as well! Lots of lucky moments along the long, winding road of server admining

Historically it takes about 2-4 weeks for the Bukkit team to update their server software. It's an unfortunate waiting game but there's no way around it, so you just have to be patient.

Unfortunately the best thing you can do is wait for the official recommended release of Bukkit for 1.7. This has been a problem for literally every update of Minecraft since the beginning of Minecraft. Users get impatient and don't understand, but there's not much you can do about it other than urge them to also be patient. There are dev builds and other ways of kind of having "faux" updates, but unless you're really tech savvy and understand the Bukkit API very well you'll have difficulty using them. Even on our server we tend to just wait for the recommended build.

Skip all the usual hosts if you understand Linux and go for something like Amazon EC2, where you'll have total control. The "Minecraft" specific hosts are always overpriced and underpowered. Just sayin'.
