Some mods will require a dependency mod, when downloading mods, always check if they require certain other mods.

Otherwise you can practically play on any version of minecraft, load up the launcher and select the installations option, it'll be next to skins and play. From there you can create a new installation, and select the version/snapshot you want, just be sure you have the proper version of forge for that version.

That'll definitely help on modding, did you get the mods to finally work?

I've sometimes had that issue, when "recommended" doesn't work, "latest" should.

Edit: Also consider something when modding, when you do a new installation and have forge installed, you might want to change the JVM Arguments to have more ram allotted to Minecraft, some mods will get ram heavy and make Minecraft run out of memory if you have too low of ram allotted.

    This would be forge- https://files.minecraftforge.net/net/minecraftforge/forge/

From there you download the installer for forge (be sure to get the correct one for your version), install forge, and in the minecraft installer, there should be "installations" and you select "new installation" and forge should show up for you in the options of what version/snapshot/etc to use under the "version" option.

You've downloaded and installed forge right? I know that when you run multiple mods, you'll wanna have forge installed, it's basically the mod loader. Some mods will conflict with each other though, but Immersive Engineering tends to work with a lot of mods in my experiences.

I think there's another mod loader like fabric, but forge is my go-to on running mods

As for forge, you'll want forge meant for your version of Minecraft, I run on 1.12.2 myself so I use a 1.12.2 version of forge

Edit: As for .json files, the ones I work with, think of them as coding and scripting for a mod, the ones I work with determines what textures my MCA villagers will be able to use by default, and another allows me to add in custom villagers with their own trade tables.
