I go hikingand i dont know how they rate for arch support, but i find keen or coleman boots to be nice. I can normally find good shoes to fit my feet and i never have my arch slip(wierd genetic thing, it hurts)

You might have your houses too far apart/not recognized. Try building more houses- just little doors into boxes. JL2579 did a tut on how to make an iron golem farm, it had a lot of info on how they spawn.
