I developed this chicken farm based on the new hopper from snapshot 13w01a. The farm consists of two parts, an egg farm on top and an incinerator on bottom.
The egg farm works by placing chickens in a pen with a floor made of hoppers connected to a dispenser, which then shoots eggs into a lower pen. The chickens that hatch will gather around the back wall of the pen underneath their parents. Opening a gate to one side of the back wall allows the baby chickens to climb a staircase and rejoin their parents in the upper pen, thus increasing the population of the farm.
Eggs have a 1/8 chance of spawning a chicken, so it takes a while to build up the farm's population if there are only a few chickens to start. Over time, the population will grow exponentially.
The second part of the farm is an incinerator built into the bottom of the lower pen, which uses four dispensers to flood the pen and push chickens into the incinerator in the center. A piston in the incinerator pushes the chickens out of the fire to die on top of a hopper, which dispenses the feathers and cooked chickens into a chest below.
This build is 17 blocks wide, 25 blocks long, and 20 blocks high, and uses over 700 blocks. I'm currently working on a more compact version that uses fewer resources.
NOTE: The world save was made using snapshot 13w02b, since the hopper is not yet available in the stable release channel. Download the snapshot here (if you don't know what to do with it, read the Minecraft Wiki).
