Story:
Many have journeyed to the farlands, all have been unsuccessful in finding the source of its power, the force that changes reality and bends matter to its whim.

The farlands hold secrets beyond our understanding, and they do not let just anyone to pass through unscathed by their mind-altering energy.

For millenia, the elders have spoke of three mystical realms that hold great and terrible things: The Aether, a sunlit, listing collection of floating islands and beautiful terrians; The Nether, a horrid landscape of burning agony and fiery pools of evil; and the Farlands, a mystical realm of twisted reality just on the edge of our horizons. These have been preached as the three lands that hold great magical power and unknown among us. That was, and always been the truth. But they were half right.

Well, two-thirds right.

The Farlands is not a destination, but a milestone on the real journey. They are the protectors of the true destination, the uncountable blocks and blocks of land effected by the energy eminating from the epicenter of another, more terrible and beautiful realm.

The Barren Lands.

You are the chosen one, the only person who could find their way through the Farlands without meeting death along the way. You had spent many days at the Altar of Notch, saying prayers of adventure, and he granted you your wish.
Or did he?

You woke one morning, not in your home. You were outside, many blocks from home. You glanced up, and noticed the fabled, looming cliffs in the distance, spiraling and twisting into formations that were impossible yet very real. The farlands. Strangely, although you could feel the energy all around you as you approached the collosal structures, it did not slow you as it had all others that had endured but failed the challenge. As you climbed into an opening, you discovered something amazing and terrifying: the farlands ended at a short distance, unlike the many times others have gone and become lost in the infinite haze. The other side was within sight. You passed through it with ease, although you could hear ominous sounds from the dark corners of the twisted shapes, evil hisses and groans of ravenous hunger. As you emerged on the other side, you are dissapointed to find that it is almost exactly like the regular world, the same rolling hills and green grass. But you notice two things, the first being that the energy had subsided a bit, but was still present, a slight tingling in the hands and feet. The second was that it was colder. A lot colder. But there was no snow or ice, no wind or anything. Just a chill that could only be described as barren, almost mechanical.

You journey for a short while and find a small cave with signs of civilation, the first you've seen since your arrival. Noting the sun's setting, you decide to take rest in the cave, and possibly look for other people. After relighting the torches that have since been extinguished (Or never lit?) you find the cave empty of others, but not of items. There is a chest filled with supplies and a bed. Cryptic messages and notes are written on the walls, as if they were addressed to you. You take one of the five loaves of bread, suprisingly warm, and rest in the bed. Your mind slowly drifts and you fall asleep.

The chill settled into a frost, and has soaked into your bones. You are freezing, beyond any kind of cold youve ever expirienced. There is ice, all around you, semi-transparent. You see light glowing faintly from within the ice. It surrounds you. You realize you are in a cave. But a cave unlike anything youve seen before. Water rushes all around, ice hangs and chills you to your core, permafrost layers the ground and shines lightly with the moisture of the wet, frozen air. Its dark, very dark. You rummage through your supplies and realize you brought a torch. You place it down and become illuminated by a wonderous landscape of bitter, frozen beauty. You notice, as before, the random beams of light shimmering through the ice, in amorphous shapes and pockets, except for one. One group of light, that seemed to shine brighter than the rest, was shaped like a box, a bulding almost. You begin to walk down the cave to investigate but are stopped by an immense cracking noise from behind you. Wheeling around, you notice your fatal mistake. The torch you placed was melting the ice above it! The roof of the frozen cave collapsed upon you, sending a surge of excrutiatingly cold water to engulf you and tear you down, filling the cave with an almighty and terrifying force. It surrounded you and tossed you with great power into the wall of the cave. You gasped for air and swung wildly, but your efforts were in vain, the water filled you lungs and the world faded away.

But it was all just a dream.

You awoke in the morning, safe and sound in that tiny cave in the vestibule just after the farlands. But you knew that dream was not just a dream. It was something much more real. You know where you must go, to the frozen center of the map, to find out a terrible truth and a place beyond the horizons of our mind, the Barren Lands.

Rules/Protips:

-Play on normal fog distance and turn smooth lighting off (This'll make the ice more opaque and therefore easier to see the definition of the caverns

-DO NOT get the reflective water shader. You'll be so lost your computer will kill itself.

-Glowstone deposits are known to have air pockets underneath.

-Play on Easy unless you are dying too much

-Read the journal entries and letters and stuff.

-Keep a fresh copy of the map handy in case you die ;P
